Story
Katie Collins has barely ever left her tiny Irish village of Ennisbawn. Why would she? With its tightknit community, friendly local pub, surrounded by glistening lakes and perfectly mysterious forests, it’s a place of peaceful beauty. Or it was peaceful. Until Callum Dempsey turned up. Part of a hotshot (and, Katie has to admit, hot is annoyingly apt for him...) development team with zero eye for beauty or charm, he’s not only building a hideous hotel just outside the village, he’s also just announced a plan to knock down Ennisbawn’s only remaining pub.

After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ - that is, until he dumped her for a blonde 20-something colleague. Well it’s pretty bad actually. First Max ghosts her and then, after weeing on a stick (but mostly her hands), a few weeks later Lil discovers she’s pregnant.

And so she’s back at her parents’ B&B, sleeping in the living room (she can’t get upstairs) and having her hair washed by her mum (she can’t get in the shower). You never forget the one that got away, do you? Nell Mason is extremely happy with her life–or at least that’s what she tells herself. She’s lucky to have a high-powered job as a lawyer, even if it does come with an eccentric set of billionaire divorce clients. And she’s absolutely fine living with her sweet, if slightly dull, boyfriend Gus in their London flat, where they have very sensible sex once (okay, sometimes twice) a week. She’s definitely not stuck in a rut.

Great story
- By Mrs. B C Murrill on 23-12-2021
Publisher's Summary
An achingly funny story from the author of the best-selling You Had Me at Hello.
When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues' wedding, all the blame falls on her - turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your school days. Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie's forced to take an extended sabbatical - ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right?
Wrong. Banished back to her hometown of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a man who probably hasn't heard the word no in a decade but also suffering an excruciating regression to her teenage years as she moves back in with her widowed father and judgy, layabout sister.
When the world is asking who you are, it's hard not to question yourself. Who's that girl? Edie is ready to find out.

More than a bit of fun
There was more to this book than I anticipated. I bought it because it sounded like a Marian Keyes type read - fun and easy. And it was that. But it also showed the impact of long held tragedy and how that shaped the main character’s life and experience, including her self worth. The end was massively disappointing, the author having done such a great job of getting me completely invested in the relationship!

Brilliant
Literally laugh-out-loud funny and even made me cry. Sure, the storyline is a bit over-the-top maybe, and the narrator had different takes on punctuation than I would have reading it myself, but honestly, i loved it and definitely recommend it.

Good book, but a few narrator errors
This book is funny without trying too hard. I like the fact that Edie is in her mid-30s and doesn’t have the “I’m single and life is over” angst that characters of a similar age have in some chick-lit novels.
I initially avoided this one because I didn’t like the premise of Edie kissing a groom at his wedding, but the book brilliantly deals with the shame cast upon Edie for an incident that she didn’t initiate.
The narrator is generally great, except for a few instances where she accidentally refers to Elliot instead of Edie. I noticed it more than once, and it kind of momentarily takes you out of the story. Would still recommend though.

Enjoyable but ends flat
I enjoyed listening to this book, the background with the family was told well and I could relate. Quite a few ha ha moments. While I was hoping the two main characters would get together there was something lacking, not many lead up moments that had you gripped. The ending was also a let down. Some people like open endings but I feel so incomplete especially after committing so many hours to the story... The narration was mostly good except that there was no voice difference between the two main characters so couldn’t tell who was who in some parts.
