Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to - and approach for - overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy”.

Story
Have you ever wondered why some people are super-achievers and seem to go from success to success while others never seem to get out of the starting blocks? In my 40 years of coaching high-achieving entrepreneurs, I’ve noticed that they all go through a process to help them break through to the next level of success. I call this process "The 4 C’s Formula". The 4 C’s Formula is a universal process that can be used by anyone who wants to achieve greater success in any part of their life.
Publisher's Summary
Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of 'when' decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. Timing, it's often assumed, is an art; in When, Pink shows that timing is, in fact, a science.
Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for us as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers or get married? In When, Pink distils cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give listeners compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged lives.

Answers many questions
"When" answers many questions that seem obvious once revealed, but that few have thought to ask. In a similar vein to "Drive", Dan Pink grabs the data from many sources, to construct a meaningful guide to optimising your performance in all arenas, from the professional to the personal. If you're a teacher this book will make many pennies drop. If you're a human being who sleeps, it will give you relatable and useful information. In other words, everyone should read this book.

Are you a lark, owl or third-bird?
If you could sum up When in three words, what would they be?
Insightful, evidence based
What other book might you compare When to, and why?
Drive by Dan Pink because it has a similar flow and use of external evidence, so isn't just Dan's opinion.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The Time Hackers handbook
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When I realised I wasn't an owl or a lark, but a third-bird.
Any additional comments?
A great buy.
