Story
In Unamurra, a drought-scarred, one-pub town deep in the outback, two men are savagely murdered a month apart - their bodies elaborately arranged like angels. With no witnesses, no obvious motives and no apparent connections between the killings, how can lone police officer Detective Dana Russo - flown in from hundreds of kilometres away - possibly solve such a baffling, brutal case? Met with silence and suspicion from locals who live by their own set of rules, Dana must take over a stalled investigation with only a week to make progress.

Boring woman sleuth
- By Yvette Elliott on 02-04-2024
Publisher's Summary
In the desolate outback town of Finnigans Gap, police struggle to maintain law and order. Thieves pillage opal mines, religious fanatics recruit vulnerable young people, and billionaires do as they please.
Then an opal miner is found crucified and left to rot down his mine. Nothing about the miner's death is straightforward, not even who found the body. Sydney homicide detective Ivan Lucic is sent to investigate, assisted by inexperienced young investigator Nell Buchanan.
But Finnigans Gap has already ended one police career and damaged others, and soon both officers face damning allegations and internal investigations. Have Ivan and Nell been set up, and, if so, by whom?
As time runs out, their only chance at redemption is to find the killer. But the more secrets they uncover, the more harrowing the mystery becomes, as events from years ago take on a startling new significance.
For in Finnigans Gap, opals, bodies and secrets don't stay buried for ever.
A superb stand-alone thriller from the acclaimed and award-winning author of the international best sellers Scrublands, Silver and Trust.

Absolutely loved this book. It grips you from the start with language appropriate from the opal fields. Listened to this book for two days and will tackle it again for good measure. Loved the performance by Dorje - A truly Australian accent that was needed from the story. Fast paced and lots going on all the time. Enjoy 💗

Chris Hammer doesn't disappoint
Have loved everything Chris has done so far and this was a great pivot to jump directly into the investigation from the cops pov versus the journo pov. Really enjoyed getting to know old characters more, with some references to past favourites also. Great interwoven storylines and narration, looking forward to more books!
