Story
Best-selling author David Gillespie turns his attention to a phenomenon that damages businesses, seeds mental disease and discomfort and can bring civilisations to the brink of implosion - the psychopath. Psychopaths are often thought of as killers and criminals, but actually 5 to 10 percent of people are probably psychopathic without ever indulging in a single criminal act. These everyday psychopaths may be charming in the early stages of relationships or employment, but, Gillespie argues, their presence in your life is at best disruptive and at worst highly dangerous.

Story
According to best-selling author and researcher David Gillespie, we are more addicted than ever before, which is playing havoc with our dopamine levels. This is fuelling epidemic-like levels of depression, anxiety and stress. Gillespie reveals a large and robust body of research that shows how addictive activities, such as screen use, sugar consumption, drinking, gambling, shopping and smoking, spike our dopamine levels. This, in turn, affects our brain's ability to regulate our mood. The good news is that we can break the cycle to make things better.

Story
With their labile and rapidly developing brains, adolescents are particularly susceptible to addiction, and addiction leads to anxiety and depression. What few parents will know is that what we think of as the most typical addictions and problematic teen behaviours - smoking, drinking, drug taking, sex leading to teenage pregnancy - are on the decline. The bad news is that a whole raft of addictions has taken their place.

Journalist Nicole Madigan was stalked for over three years. The relentless and debilitating experience wreaked havoc in her personal and professional life, leaving her trapped in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Nicole uses her own story as an entry point to examine the psychology behind stalking behaviours and their impact on victim-survivors. Whether by a stranger, acquaintance or former partner, stalking can have a catastrophic effect on a victim-survivor's mental, social and financial wellbeing. At its worst, it can lead to physical violence, even death.

Story
Although highly controversial, Hervey Cleckley's Mask of Sanity provides one of the most influential clinical descriptions of psychopathy in the 20th century. At the crux of his argument, Cleckley claims that many psychopathic personalities go undiagnosed because they maintain a social mask that conceals their mental disorder and enables them to blend in with society. Furthermore, many of these affected individuals appear to function normally in accordance with standard psychiatric criteria.

A very intelligent book and empowering
- By Margot on 06-10-2023
Publisher's Summary
Most bullies are psychopaths, but not all psychopaths look like bullies. Many blind us with their charm and dazzle us with their success. But they all share a common trait that makes them highly dangerous: they don't have empathy.
Research tells us that one in twenty people have no empathy. Empathy is the human ingredient that enables trust, forges bonds and allows teams to work and workplaces to thrive. It is why we are able to build cities and play football. The psychopath is not interested in cooperative effort but in individual power and glory - and they will stomp on anyone who gets in their way, destroying careers, teams and, sometimes, organisations.
Using research and stories drawn from history, politics, sports and business, Gillespie explains how workplace psychopaths - from bosses to clients, colleagues and customers - see the world, and highlights their devastating impact on workplaces. He shows empaths how to self-protect and organisations how to use trust, transparency and teamwork to insulate against the corrosive impact.
Unflinching in its analysis of the problem and clear-sighted in suggesting solutions, this is an essential guide for spotting, managing and ejecting the workplace psycho, once and for all.

Avoid becoming the next meal
David Gillespie changed my relationship with a family member when I read ‘Taming Toxic People.’ Now I need his help to help me navigate someone who is ‘Toxic at Work.’
The first half of the book, went through some history and studies of psychopathy. It gave me insight into how neurotypical and psychopaths’ brains behave. The next section involved a case study that played out a typical work scenario.
On the back of this, the last chapter gives sound advice on how to deal with the psychopath I have at work. In fact I started with this chapter and ended with it twice. This chapter alone is great if you are time poor and deep in the trenches trying to keep your head down.
Thanks again David Gillespie. Just what I needed at the right time.

Practical and helpful
A very easy listen, with great examples to illustrate the behaviours. I found this book helpful, and the story telling was relevant to support a better understanding. Also feeling less lonely in what I am dealing with. I recommend this book.

All the red flags!
Rang so true with me, currently suffering in a toxic workplace in the public service where leadership is populated by psychopaths - could only have been better if it contained strategies for bringing them (psychopaths) out into the light. I am still fighting for integrity, transparency, honesty and accountability from these people, who have continually breached DPS policy and have been supported in this by a flawed system of checks and balances that supports the psychopaths in their bullying, harassment and discrimination. Their actions have damaged more lives than just mine. I intend to keep fighting until all options have been exhausted. Wish me luck.

That’s the reason I left
Wow! On occasion … an extreme brief moment …I have thought..”Maybe I shouldn’t have retired” but having worked with “Jasmine” and had her character diagnosed and documented in David’s Gillespie’s book Toxic at Work, …. I feel completely relieved and thankful that I did.
David Gillespie gives amazing insight into the character, action and activities of the psychopath that enable you to identify them in all areas of life and what to do to survive a working relationship with them until you find an out.
These people never change their character so avoid at all costs, his advice reminds me of the proverb to be as wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove around the psychopath…
The 1:20 ratio of the number of psychopaths is concerning but helpful in considering how many there are around us in all aspects of our lives. Food for thought!
A very easy, interesting and compelling read, so much so that am buying a copy for my adult children who are in the infancy of their business endeavours as a tool to identify the psychopath before making the mistake of employing them.
Thanks David!

Wow, Just Wow. An Amazing articulate read/listen
David Gillespie is a brilliant author and always does an impeccable job. He is highly informative and effective. His common sense approach to this insidious problem of Psychopath's in the workplace is to be highly commended. Brilliantly researched while explaining the phenomena in an engaging way. After my 35 plus years working I confess to having had some bouts of PTSD during this great audiobook and reflecting on the long line of Psychopaths I have encountered. If you are currently in the workforce or just still above ground do yourself a favour and read or listen to this, you won't regret it.
