Story
When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

Very sweet, very sweet, very sweet.
I read this as I entered into my 30th year on this Earth. I’d just broken up with my partner of 2 1/2 years, Moved back in with my parents, with no money and a head full of lead. Your book, Sugar, was my salve. This potion of people, who generously and bravely contributed their anecdotes and your honest, sage advice answered questions I didn’t even know I had. It’s like therapy but personable. I feel like you’re right in the room with me. Thank you for your radical acceptance, it’s refreshing.

Advice you didn't know you needed
I've never heard of the Dear Sugar advice column but it seems to have been popular and I can see why. This is a collection of letters written to and answered by Sugar (aka Cheryl Strayed - author of Wild which is also now a movie). Sugar has a beautiful way with words. Her advice seems sensible but it's the pieces of herself and her life woven into the answering letters that make it as touching as it is. There are some heartbreaking letters with some heartbreaking answers. There's wit, wisdom and wildness but there's also tragedy, tenderness and thought provoking issues/stories/answers. There are snippets in these letters that I know will pop up from time to time because so many of these are everyday things, everyday problems, everyday people trying desperately to do what's right, trying to find the best solution. Sugar does an amazing job at helping them whilst also giving the reader plenty to ponder about themselves.

Amazing
This is a life changing book. Cheryl has a voice of kindness, truth and balance that taps my very soul. I love Dear Sugars, in all its forms. Cheryl’s voice reverberates in my ears at different points of days and months, and no doubt years. Ultimately it says listen carefully for your truth and do the work. I love this book and the humanity behind it.
