Story
Misanthrope. Iconoclast. Apostate. Drunk. Many words have been used to describe Doug Stanhope, but rarely has “hopeful” been one of them. However, heading into 2016, Stanhope peered through the apocalyptic fog and saw a forecast that was more rainbows than acid rain: His first book was set for release, his new stand-up special was in the can, and he was about to film a television pilot with his friend and confidant Johnny Depp. The only thing that could stop Doug was himself, and that’s exactly what he did.

Story
Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family — he’s not a monster — he’s just beat, which is why his son’s (ruthless) first full sentence, “I’d like to play alone, please,” has since become his mantra.

Story
Debauched, divorced, and courting death, Billy Ray Schafer is a comedian who has forgotten how to laugh. Over the course of seven spun-out days across the American Southwest, he travels from from hell gig to hell gig in search of a reason to keep living in this bleak and violent glimpse into the psyche of a thoroughly ruined man. Ex-inmate, ex-husband, ex-father - comedian is the only title Schafer has left. Trapped in the wreckage of his wasted career, Billy Ray knows the answer to the question: What happens when the opportunity doesn't come - or worse - it comes and goes?

Publisher's Summary
An unfiltered, unapologetic, hilarious, and sometimes obscene assemblage of tales from the down-and-dirty traveling comedy circuit
Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity.
While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants. Not to say he hasn't rubbed elbows with fame. He's crashed its party, snorted its coke, and jumped into its pool naked, literally and often repeatedly - all while artfully dodging fame himself.
Doug spares no legally permissible detail, and his stories couldn't be told any other way. They're weird, uncomfortable, gross, disturbing, and fucking funny.
This Is Not Fame is by no means a story of overcoming a life of excess, immorality, and reckless buffoonery. It's an outright celebration of it. For Stanhope, the party goes on.

Doug Stanhope at his best!
An hilarious collection of moments from Doug's life... all the better in Audiobook form due to the interjection of people present when the events occurred... narrators equally as unreliable as Doug.
Put the kids, and your partner, to bed... have a beer or two and just enjoy the ride!

Insightful and Hilarious
I started the book on an Australian 20 hour road trip and finished all at once along the drive. It was not my intention, I just didn’t want it to stop, and it made me not want to listen to anything else, it was great. It enhanced the trip, like Doug himself has often done.
The stories in the book are great and I was so happy hearing Doug reflect on his experiences and career and the books are a continued openness of his artistic expression. This book is compelling and it is a great road book, of road stories and fits in with the Bukowski, Kerouac, Kesey - tales of a life lived, people trying to live a life full and worthy of their allotted time.
Doug sounds happy and he is right: Bingo is adorable, his life is pretty great and the people he surrounds himself with are all excellent value, and it comes through in the narrative and the banter they recorded in between chapters, definitely an added bonus for listeners.
I hope Brian has got Doug working on books three, four and five. If he doesn’t want to write more, could Audible pay Doug and his friends to read all of their audio books?
I loved the stories of the UK tour, the Roseanne story really got me in the heart and having seen Doug live, and knowing how strong a comedian he is, hearing about how he is feeling and what is happening pre, during and post show makes it seem all the more brilliant.
The fan interaction stories and Doug’s reflections on his own humanity and career made it by far the best audiobook experience I’ve had in a long time.
It’s life affirming in the best possible way. Listening to the book you feel like you’re hanging out and a part of it, I can not recommend it to strongly enough.

Loved every minute. Hilarious and insightful as usual. I’m glad I waited for the audio version as there are plenty of extras and guests to enjoy in addition to the actual text.

Unapologetically Hilarjous
Stanhope is the Hunter S Thomson of the comedy world and even he would give Hunter a run for his money. Stanhope holds nothing back in his hilarious recounts of his time on the road.
