Story
Detective Lauren Pengelly has only been part of the Penzance police force for less than two years, but that’s enough time to know that the sleepy Cornish town doesn’t see many murders. So, when the bones of a woman with a hole in her skull are discovered behind a derelict cottage, she immediately assumes the worst. Rallying her team, Lauren is flooded with a strange sense of relief when the bones turn out to be almost twenty years old, not a recent victim. But it quickly turns to dread when she receives her second heart-stopping call of the day–a little girl, Isla, has been kidnapped.

So much more than I expected
What a master story teller this author is. I experienced so many emotions from cheering for Sandy and then loathing and back to cheering. Quite an emotional ride, so much so, that I was glad when it was finished, my nerves were frazzled. I look forward to more DSI Grace stories.

Although I wasn’t wanting to hear her story I really enjoyed it
Thought the ending was predictable but it was short and to the point so ok. It could be a woman thing but her story had me longing for bed time so I could hear more.

Sandy's Story
Gemma Whelan's narration was great. I enjoyed this book. Some parts were a bit beyond belief. Actually quite a few things were a bit beyond belief. But Sandy is such a daft bat that you do end up believing them!!

Melodramatic and dead on the page.
Excruciatingly overlong, drawn out scenes, one after the other. It felt like the author had done some research on Casino behaviors or visited Germany as a deduction to get the street names correct. I have seldom read a book where a female character felt this inauthentic. Groan.
It didn’t help that the actor read the whole book in a monotone. And I really am fond of her work usually- on screen.
