Story
Rock climbers can’t afford to make careless mistakes. But Detective Inspector Nick Dixon’s former climbing partner, Jake Fayter, died doing just that. Or so it seems. Dixon suspects foul play, but his only leads are unreliable accounts of something odd happening in Cheddar Gorge seconds before Jake fell. The more Dixon learns about Jake’s life, the more he realises that Jake hadn’t been quite the man he remembered...and a lot of people could have wanted him dead. Once Dixon gets too close to the truth, those people will emerge from the shadows and kill to protect their secrets.

Story
Bergen Private Investigator Varg Veum is perplexed when two wildly different cases cross his desk at the same time. A lawyer, anxious to protect her privacy, asks Varg to find her sister, who has disappeared with her husband, seemingly without trace, while a ship carrying unknown cargo is heading towards the Norwegian coast, and the authorities need answers. Varg immerses himself in the investigations, and it becomes clear that the two cases are linked, and have unsettling - and increasingly uncanny - similarities to events that took place 36 years earlier.

Publisher's Summary
A Swedish crime writer as thrilling as Mankell, a detective as compelling as Wallander....
Chief Inspector Van Veeteren delves into a dark family mystery in the sixth book in Håkan Nesser's Van Veeteren series,The Unlucky Lottery.
Four friends celebrate winning the lottery. Just hours later, one of them - Waldemar Leverkuhn - is found in his home, stabbed to death.
With Chief Inspector Van Veeteren on sabbatical, working in a secondhand bookshop, the case is assigned to Inspector Münster. But when another member of the lottery group disappears as well as Leverkuhn's neighbour, Münster appeals to Van Veeteren for assistance.
Soon Münster will find himself interviewing the Leverkuhn family, including the eldest - Irene, a resident of a psychiatric clinic. And as he delves deeper into the family's history, he will discover dark secrets and startling twists which threaten not only the clarity of the case but also his life....
The Unlucky Lottery is followed by the seventh book in the series, The Hour of the Wolf.

More of Hakan Nesser
Captivating storyteller!
This is the second book of this writer I have read. In the first I guessed the killer half way through.
This one is Suspenseful right to the very end!
His psychological analysis in both books very good.
But the same mixture of missing bodies, one cut to pieces and homosexuality explained as environmental!
