Story
The Priory may look ramshackle in appearance, but Peter, Margaret and Celia are totally charmed by their newly inherited country house. But there's more to The Priory than meets the eye. Left empty for years, hardly a single person has set foot inside, and down in the village, the locals whisper of a ghostly figure that roams the halls. When a murder is committed, the new owners start to fear the rumours are true - but is their new home really haunted, or is someone trying to scare them away?

The crime was committed on stage at the Unicorn Theatre, when an unloaded gun fired a very real bullet; the victim was Arthur Surbonadier, an actor clawing his way to stardom using blackmail instead of talent; the suspects included two unwilling girlfriends and several relieved blackmail victims. The stage was set for one of Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn's most baffling cases.

Employed at Wintringham Hall, the delightful but decaying Sussex country residence of the elderly Lady Susan Carey, his first task entails welcoming her eccentric guests to a weekend house-party, at which her bombastic nephew—who recognises Stephen from his former life—decides that an after-dinner séance would be more entertaining than bridge. Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Sparkling characterisation and inventive plot from one of the best-known and beloved detective novelists of all time.
The stabbing of irascible General Sir Arthur Billington-Smith fails to stir up grief in anyone - least of all his family, which is no wonder considering the way he had treated them all during the fateful weekend. He had disinherited his son, humiliated his wife, refused to help his financially stricken nephew and made no secret of his loathing for his son's fiancée, a cabaret dancer. Inspector Harding picks his way through a mass of familial discontent to find the culprit - and find much more besides.

Awful reading !
The awful reading was painful to listen to. Reader’s different voices were excruciating. Shame, as Georgette Heyer books are really good.

Disappointed
I had read this novel years ago and remember it as a good, old fashioned detective novel. Sadly the audio version was ruined by dreadful narration. The straightforward narrative is good, but character voices verge on caricature, the cabaret dancer (supposedly Mexican) is particularly difficult to listen to, and distracted me from the story. I got about a third of the way through before I had to give up. Such a disappointment.
