The Master story teller strikes again.
- By carol on 27-05-2023
Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.
His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.
The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger, which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.
Anthony is arrested by an old enemy...Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: The Sentence Is Death. She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.
Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder, and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.
But will Hawthorne take the call?

Rory Kinnear brings Horowitz alive
RK is excellent as the narrator. What a delight to listen to. His vocal gymnastics evoking each of Horowitz’s characters is a joy to listen to.

I so enjoy these books not only the twists and turns, Anthony’s frustration and Hawthorns dogged nature but the brilliant narration, every sigh, every sense of “who’s running this show”!

Love the Hawthorne Series.
What a wonderful character Anthony has created in Hawthorne and Rory Kinnear brilliantly brings him, and Anthony, to life.
My only gripe with this story was what appeared to be a CV pretending to be the first few chapters of the story. Boring.
Once Hawthorne was in the story, it sailed.

I wanted to say ‘seriously funny’, but one probably should be serious about murder! Laugh out loud. I’m new to AH (the nephews & nieces likely read the Adam … sorry … Alex Rider books), and I’m going to deep dive into AH’s work now! See you in a month or so!

Another wonderful story
Yet again a fantastic concept of the author to write about a version of himself in which he is the butt of many jokes and at the mercy of a character (Hawthorne) that at times, is so antagonistic, it brings laugh out loud moments.also really love the narration of Rory Kinnear who is able to give so much life to each character.

Another enjoyable trip with the author and detective pairing. I like the narrative structure which affords the author the chance to be a character in the story. Excellent narration too, as always.

I am soooo PEEVED at Mr Horowitz...
I am hooked!! Being a massive 'who dunnit' fan I am utterly smitten with the Holmesque lead character, Daniel Hawthorne that Mr Horowitz has created. He is equal parts Sherlock and Hercule with his own hidden past creating the very enticing enigma wrapped in a mystery scenario. The cleverly crafted plots provide the MUST have red herrings, left turns and about faces of the classics. I love that, as in Conan Doyles works, London walks through the books as it's own timeless character. The eloquent nods and references to the murder mystery masters makes me smile and feel like I'm 'in the club'; 'in the know'; in on the inside joke. Placing himself, as a version of HIMSELF, in the stories as the reluctant but equally awed, admiring and bumbling Watson is an absolute stroke of genius. As I said in my review title, I AM PEEVED AT MR HOROWITZ because I simply cannot wait for the next instalment, the next mystery to unravel! And lastly, but by no means leastly ;D - the brilliant casting! Having this narrated by the phenomenally talented Rory Kinnear is the icing on the proverbial cake! What a joy these stories are to listen to and immerse in. 10/10
