Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world?

Mental illness is on an unstoppable rise. Some 45 percent of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug. Illness and trauma are defining how we live.

In his new masterpiece, renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise—physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living. Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Maté has found that the common definition of 'normal' is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves. But he also shows us the pathway to reconnection and healing.

Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming audiobook shows how true health is possible—if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations. The Myth of Normal is Gabor Maté's most ambitious, compassionate and urgent book yet.

Inspiring and hopeful, a best read

Socially, personally and spiritually inspiring.
I very much appreciated the breadth of the read, the call to authenticity and the risks of not surrendering to who we truly are.
Like climate change, a book not to deny
Thank you

The best book I listened to this year

One of the most incredible and important books I've ever came across. I'm a longtime fan of Gabor Mate, and this book is a collection of his work which touches many aspects of our lives. Highly recommended!

What a timely and profound teaching!

What a timely and profound teaching!

So much appreciation to Dr. Mate and his book cocreators!

I feel so much resonance with the collective, intergenerational and global nature of the root causes of most diseases manifested in the vulnerable, marginalised and sensitive individuals.

Such a complex but incisive diagnosis of the socioeconomic, political and cultural origins of most human diseases which are mutually aggravating !

We all deserves compassionate self inquiry and collective inquiry.

Everyone is impacted by this convoluted trauma net: the patients, the compromising and compromised, the professionals, the researchers, the medical and healthcare practitioners.

Wishing more light will shine on the birthright health care that could alleviate sufferings, reenliven hearts and bodies, connect people and communities, celebrate diversities, rejuvenate lives and dreams and cherish humanity’s collective joy, wellbeing, peace and thriving!

I don’t read much, but this is by far the best read I have had in my new journey.

I enjoyed the way the concepts and theories are put together, with scientific backing that demystify the point. This I can only believe in my present self state will be a key reminder of the journey I continue to do my best to embark on! The book was well read, and though long, it was an easy read.

Pretty good

I thought this was quite an insightful and interesting book where I have taken away tidbits for my life, though, readers should note this guy is about as 70s flower power as can be, even with the inclusion of a chapter about psychedelic substances and its benefits. Writing style and narration was very smooth and easy to digest.
