Publisher's Summary

When you are all out of heroes, all that's left are the villains.

Black Herran was a dread demonologist, and the most ruthless general in all Essoran. She assembled the six most fearsome warriors to captain her armies: a necromancer, a vampire lord, a demigod, an orcish warleader, a pirate queen, and a twisted alchemist. Together, they brought the whole continent to its knees.... Until the day she abandoned her army, on the eve of total victory.

Forty years later, she must bring her former captains back together for one final stand, in the small town of Tarnbrooke - the last bastion against a fanatical new enemy tearing through the land, intent on finishing the job Black Herran started years before.

Seven bloodthirsty monsters. One town. Their last hope.

Terrific

Thoroughly enjoyed every part of this book, from the characters to the plot to the plot twists. The narration was very well done. I really hope this gets a sequal.

Brilliant in every way. Fast paced, great characters, dark, gory, humorous, fun storyline and the narrator made each character unique and memorable. Perfect!

Great story, but the narration is world class

This was a humorous grimdark...wait is that a thing? Well, it is now.

This was a fun frolic through a last stand battle with the worst monsters, and even though they were each deplorable, Johnston did a great job making you root for them.

A demonologist, a necromancer, a vampire, alchemist, a pirate queen, an Orc, and a once upon a time God of war. The chemistry of hatred for each other was brilliantly done with such finesse. There were characters I rooted for more than others, and a couple of peasants that made it interesting and fun and added that extra layer.

Everyone has their own reasons for being there and watching plans hatch and come apart was one of the things that delighted me most.

The narration was top class and absolutely added another layer to each of the characters in a way only a true professional can. I will listen to anything George Weightman narrates. He really is that good!

I don't recommend this to people who don't like grimdark, as it is dark despite the humour and antics. But for those that do, it is a quick and easy read and a shade lighter than the normal dark and gloom.
