Story
Nedd Brockmann isn’t afraid to dream big. Fresh after running fifty marathons in fifty days, the twenty-three-year-old had an idea: a 4000-kilometre run across Australia, averaging 100 kilometres per day with the aim of completing it in the fastest known time of 43 days. He wasn’t chasing fame or public recognition. He just wanted to test his limits and raise a million dollars for homelessness in the process.

When she was five, tragedy prompted her parents to join Kabbalah, a cult-like sect of Judaism. They immersed themselves in it unreservedly–from its peculiar rituals (rolling in the snow naked to purify their sins) to the beauty of belonging to something greater than themselves. She left at eighteen–after years of abuse and living in communes in three countries–devastated and isolated, searching for meaning in her life. Today, that woman is Professor Debbie Haski-Leventhal, who specialises in finding meaning in our personal and professional lives.

Story
The film Rabbit-Proof Fence is based on this true account of Doris Pilkington's mother, Molly, who as a young girl led her two sisters on an extraordinary 1,600 kilometre walk home. Under Western Australia's invidious removal policy of the 1930s, the girls were taken from their Aboriginal families at Jigalong on the edge of the Little Sandy Desert, and transported halfway across the state to the Native Settlement at Moore River, north of Perth. Here Aboriginal children were instructed in the ways of white society and forbidden to speak their native tongue.

Soil is the unlikely story of our most maligned resource as swashbuckling hero. A saga of bombs, ice ages and civilisations falling. Of ancient hunger, modern sicknesses and gastronomic delight. It features poison gas, climate collapse and a mind-blowing explanation of how rain is formed. For too long, we've not only neglected the land beneath us, we've squandered and debased it, by over-clearing, over-grazing and over-ploughing.

Why does it make sense to Ethiopian runners to get up at three a.m. to run up and down a hill? Who would choose to train on almost impossibly steep and rocky terrain, in hyena territory? And how come Ethiopian men hold six of the top 10 fastest marathon times ever? Michael Crawley spent 15 months in Ethiopia training alongside (and sometimes a fair way behind) runners at all levels of the sport, from night watchmen hoping to change their lives to world-class marathon runners, in order to answer these questions.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few. So begins this most beloved of all American Zen works. Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as this famous opening line of Shunryu Suzuki's classic. In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about. An instant teaching in the first minutes. And that's just the beginning.

Publisher's Summary
Bloomsbury presents The Lost Art of Running by Shane Benzie with Tim Major, read by Clifford Samuel.
The Lost Art of Running is an opportunity to join running-technique-analyst coach and movement guru Shane Benzie on his journey across five continents as he trains with and analyses the running style of some of the most gifted athletes on the planet.
'Running technique has to be one of the most subjective issues out there: 10 minutes' investigation on the internet will generally confuse rather than confirm what you should or should not be doing. Mother Nature gave us some amazing gifts as runners - if we rediscover them and use them, we can transform our dynamic and everyday movement.' (Shane Benzie)
Part narrative, part practical, this adventure takes you to the foothills of Ethiopia and the ‘town of runners’; to the training grounds of world-record-holding marathon runners in Kenya; racing across the Arctic Circle and the mountains of Europe, through the sweltering sands of the Sahara and the hostility of a winter traverse of the Pennine Way, to witness the incredible natural movement of runners in these environments.
Along the way, you will learn how to incorporate natural movement techniques into your own running and hear from some of the top athletes Shane has coached over the years. Whether experienced or just tackling your first few miles, this ground-breaking book will help you discover the lost art of running.
Critic Reviews
"A fascinating book." (Adharanand Finn, the best-selling author of Running with the Kenyans, The Rise of the Ultra Runners and The Way of the Runner)
"Shane's approach to running movement really works. Shane helped me prepare for my fourth Marathon des Sables. I am convinced that the insight from these sessions was instrumental in me being able to run as well as I did and secure my second win in a highly competitive race." (Elisabeth Barnes, ultra endurance runner)
"Shane is the Indiana Jones of the running world." (Damian Hall, ultra marathon runner and journalist)

As good as Born to Run
I cant believe I wrote that headline as B2R has been my favorite book for a decade. Will this one hold up after just as many listens? I do think so. It is wonderfully enjoyable, useful as a running coach, and interesting as an investigative jaunt around the world.

A must read for runners
A great book that made me more aware of how running form affects performance.
On my first listen I have already seen benefit in making changes to how I run. I will build on this as I slowly adapt to using better form and techniques.
Even if some of the stories in first section are a little repetitive, they do help to set the scene and introduce how different runners have benefited from different aspects of what Shane discusses in this book.
I will be listening to this a few more times to ensure I take it all information on board.
Highly recommended

Don't bother , disappointing and turgid
This title is a confusing mish mash of other peoples running narrations rather clumsily presented to predicate the authors main points about elasticity. I was rather hoping for an entertaining blend of running tales, with running science and running education - like for example in Born To Run, or Reborn on the Run .
Instead I found an uninspiring, repetitive mashup - often confusingly presented - with nothing new throughout,
A terrible waste of a credit - was my conclusion.
