Story
Being a defective marks me in the eyes of the Solis Fae. Wingless. Magicless. Weak. To my kind, I’m nothing—not when strength is needed to survive the perpetual snow and ice that shrouds our northern continent in endless winter. But I’ve persevered, living a meaningful yet simple life with my sister...until the hated Crown Prince of the Winter Court thunders into our village. Prince Norivun’s massive black wings and potent magic cloud my senses and steal my breath. He’s beautiful yet brutal, so when he whisks me away and locks me in his castle I’m certain my death is tomorrow’s promise.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Publisher's Summary
Return to Daevabad in the spellbinding sequel to The City of Brass.
In Daevabad, where djinn can summon flames with a snap of their fingers, where rivers run deep with ancient magic, and blood can be as dangerous as any spell, a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom.
Nahri’s life changed forever when she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad, she needed all of her grifter instincts to survive. Now, as Nahri embraces her heritage and her power, she must forge a new path.
Exiled for daring to defy his father, Ali is adrift on the unforgiving sands of his ancestral land, hunted by assassins and forced to rely on frightening new abilities that threaten to reveal a terrible family secret.
And as a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad's brass walls to celebrate, a power in the desolate north will bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates....

Wonderful!
I LOVE this series. This is the sequel to The City of Brass. It’s epic fantasy, with elements of romance, but the world building is first class and it’s wonderful to immerse yourself in middle eastern myths and read about djinn and daevas etc. The politics of this series are intricate and I’m loving the fact the characters are complex and flawed. Soneela Nankani is a wonderful narrator. There were a few slower moments in this one, but overall the pacing is excellent.

Better than the first book
After finishing this one, the first book felt like the elaborate set up to the events in this one. Great character development and complexity to their personalities. Would still recommend listening at 1.5x speed to keep the story moving, as it can get quite detailed in some areas. Going to take a break before completing the trilogy.

goodo
i liked it. great narrator. though, sometimes have to go back a bit or check the internet wiki to see who is who and what the significance of it is because of the complexity and new concepts to me. i enjoy escaping to this world on my commute.
