Publisher's Summary

From master storyteller Ken Follett, The Evening and the Morning is a historical epic that ends where The Pillars of the Earth begins.

A Time of Conflict
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. The king’s grip on the country is fragile and chaos reigns. A young boat builder dreams of a better future after a devastating Viking raid shatters the life he hoped for.

Lives Intertwined
A Norman noblewoman follows her husband to a new land only to find her life there shockingly different; and a capable monk at Shiring Abbey has a vision of transforming his humble home into a centre of learning admired throughout Europe.

The Dawn of a New Age
Now, with England at the dawn of the Middle Ages, these three people will each come into dangerous conflict with a ruthless bishop, who will do anything to increase his wealth and power, in an epic tale of ambition, rivalry, love and hate.

Thirty years ago we were introduced to Kingsbridge in The Pillars of the Earth, and now in this prequel, international bestseller Ken Follett will take us on a journey into a rich past, which will end where his masterpiece begins.

Best author I’ve ever read

Ken Follett keeps providing stories that are historically believable but totally enthralling. Continuing to cement himself as an all time favourite author.

Never fails to deliver

Ken Follett just ruins me for any other books. I never want them to end and this book was no exception. He is such a story teller. The end of this wrapped up a little bit too quickly for my taste but it did not take away from a great book that I got lost in for hours and hours. Thank you!

Ken Follett did it again.

After Pillars of the world I thought Ken can capture the life in the early ages again, but he proved me wrong. I absolutely loved this book.

Storytelling as only Ken Follett can do

I was obsessed with Pillars of the Earth when I was a teenager. And now so loved this prequel.
He writes in a way that you’re never bored, with compelling characters and rich stories.
I hope they make this into a series to bring it all to vivid life.
Beautifully narrated by John Lee who artfully managed to capture each character.

It feels like you are part of the story

Ken Follett is a master storyteller. This seamless prequel to Pillars of the Earth even written some 40 years after Pillars is a masterpiece. It tells a graphic story of life in the early 1,000s in Western England. Beautifully described and researched. Highly recommended.
