Story
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Publisher's Summary
A day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse - until she makes a purchase she hadn’t bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy’s humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.
Witnesses to Tracy’s Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly, an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie who has returned to his home county in search of someone else’s roots. All three characters learn that the past is never history and that no good deed goes unpunished.

Not the best one in the series
I did enjoy the story, having loved the other 3 in the Jackson Brodie series. However, I could not get passed the mispronunciation of Niamh (Neev not Ni-am) and various other words made my eye twitch uncontrollably. There was a different narrator for the other novels I borrowed from my local library who was so much better. Surely there is some kind of audiobook editor who should pick these things up?

Another great Jackson Brodie
Loved everything about this book BUT - how on earth did no one correct the narrator's pronunciation of the name Niamh?! It's incredibly jarring (and there are a lot of references to her in this book). The narrator is actually fantastic, so it's such a shame.
In any case, the story itself is great, the humour and cleverness we've come to expect from Kate Atkinson. The kind of book that I always look forward to re-reading (I think this is my fourth time 😁). Very excited about the sixth Jackson Brodie coming this year. Brilliant.
