Publisher's Summary

From the author of the classic Farseer trilogy, Ship of Magic is the first part of the Liveship Traders. Set in a land bordering the Six Duchies, Robin Hobb begins her epic of pirates, talking ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles.

Wizardwood, a sentient wood. The most precious commodity in the world. Like many legendary wares, it comes only from the Rain River Wilds.

But how can one trade with the Rain Wilders, when only a liveship, fashioned from wizardwood, can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain River? Rare and valuable, a liveship will quicken only when three members, from successive generations, have died on board. The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening, as Althea Vestrit’s father is carried on deck in his death-throes. Althea waits for the ship that she loves more than anything else in the world to awaken. Only to discover that the Vivacia has been signed away in her father’s will to her brutal brother-in-law, Kyle Haven. . .

Others plot to win, or steal, a liveship. The Paragon, known by many as the Pariah, went mad, turned turtle and drowned his crew. Now he lies, blind, lonely and broken on a deserted beach. But greedy men have designs to restore him, to sail the waters of the Rain Wild River once more.

Critic Reviews

"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers…what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." (The Times)

"Hobb is a remarkable storyteller." (Guardian)

Great book but I dont like the narrator

Really enjoyed the story as with all the Robin Hobb books but the listening experience was ruined for me by the narrator. I know the Hobb books are so much better if listened to in order and that is the only reason I continued to listen! The narrator sighs out every paragraph as if it is painful to her and her character voices are even more unpleasant to listen to! Thank goodness not all the books by Hobb are read by her or I would never listen to any of them.

Great narration

Was put off by the bad reviews of this narrator but checked the sample. She was terrific. A very distinctive style but rolled the language around with such attention that I enjoyed every word - including the more detailed descriptions I has skipped through while reading. I highly recommend this and am just about to dive straight into the next one.

Take the time.<br />

I had just finished The Assassin's Apprentice trilogy and started on this trilogy wihout reading the reviews. I struggled for a half an hour, was not happy then read some of the reviews. Many people seem unhappy with the narrator, and I could understand why . It took me 3 hours to get used to her voice and the unannounced Point of View changes. I would be interested in seeing the text to see if there is different script for different PoV. My advice is persist, it is an excellent story. I went back after I finished and listened to the first hour. It was nowhere near as bad as I remembered now that I am accustomed to the narrator. I look forward to the next book.

Love this book but the narration wasn't good

I have loved this book in print for over 10 years now, but the narration is ruining the audiobook. She sounds like a news anchor, trained to be monotone. Im sure she's a nice lady, but she doesn't sound very natural reading this story.

Too much filler, better narrator

Book seemed a bit too long for the story. Could have been wrapped up a few chapters sooner. Narrator took along time to get use too.

I love the invention of Wizardwood in this adventure

I found the book to be wonderful, but for any readers who find the 29hr length of the audiobook a bit of a challenge stick with it as it is worth it. Ending was a bit abrupt.
