Publisher's Summary

At forty-three Jeff Winston is tired of his low-paid, unrewarding job, tired of the long silences at the breakfast table with his wife, saddened by the thought of no children to comfort his old age. But he hopes for better things, for happiness, maybe tomorrow ...

But a sudden, fatal heart attack puts paid to that. Until Jeff wakes up in his eighteen-year-old body, all his memories of the next twenty-five years intact. If he applies those memories, he can be rich in this new chance at life and can become one of the most powerful men in America.

Until he dies at forty-three and wakes up in his eighteen-year-old body again ... and again in a continuous twenty-five year cycle each time starting from scratch at the age of eighteen to reclaim lost loves, make a fortune - or remedy past mistakes.

A novel of gripping adventure, romance, and fascinating speculation on the nature of time, Replay asks the question: "What if you could live your life over again?"

Critic Reviews

"In 1986 (seven years before the release of the film Groundhog Day), Grimwood published this riveting novel about a man who dies of a heart attack and then wakes up in his college dorm room 25 years earlier. He discovers that he has the chance to live his life over again. And again. And again. This is one of the most elegant and moving time travels stories ever written. A thrilling adventure that also explores the nature of destiny and the human experience." (Ernest Cline, author of READY PLAYER ONE)

"I didn't just love Replay, I believed in it, I dreamed of it ... I also discovered that I wasn't only believer; at the time, there were fan sites dedicated to Replay. Hundreds of people - like the fellow replayers we never realize are out there - were all dreaming my same dream" (Brad Meltzer)

Sits Among the Greatest Time Travel Fiction

A couple of odd reviews here so I have to give my two cents. I think I’ve read just about every Time travel novel out there. Somehow I hadn’t seen this. I didn’t know about it. Somehow I lived through the eighties and didn’t hear of it. Ironic? I raced through this book from beginning to end. It reminded me a little of Stephen King. Loved the characters - no, he is not an a-hole as someone wrote. What book were you reading? No, it’s not soft porn as one reviewer wrote. There was a pretty raunchy chapter. Get over it. We are all entitled to our opinions though.
I 100% absolutely loved this book. In my Top ten favourite books of all time. Great characters and ideas. Made me stop and think about my own life many times. Had a mini existential crisis.. Can’t believe Ken is no longer with us. That makes my head spin more than a little. I want to keep this book on my shelf forever. I encourage you to give it a crack. Very easy read. Immediately gets you into it. Why are you still reading this? Go on!

Argh the ending!!!!

Really intriguing storyline, but ugh the ending ruined it for me! The story raised thought-provoking and gripping questions that I desperately wanted answered, unfortunately the storyline became more about the relationship between the main characters and didn't answer some of the fundamental questions it initially asked.

4.49 rounded down to 4

This was a great listen that certainly made me think about the concept of repeating your life over and over again. I kept wanted to listen and I certainly finished the book in good time, which is always a sign that I am enjoying the book.

You might notice that I seem to only ever give 4 or 5 star reviews. It is not that I am overly generous . There are many books that I have listened to that I have not particularly liked - I just don't write a review for those books.

Incredible audiobook

I started listening to this completely random audiobook, based on an intriguing-sounding story and cool-looking cover.
My expectations were quite low, as it looked like your stock-standard sci-fi tale by a virtually unknown author.
Man, was I blown away!

The tale hooked me, right from go. The writing is phenomenal, and – quite unusual for an audiobook – the narration kept up in quality, too.
I don’t want to reveal too much about the plot, but there is one element that struck me as quite odd while listening: the whole story is set between the 1960s-1980s, yet the story featured some very modern themes and sentiments.
It wasn’t until I read up about the author, as previous reviewers have, and discovered that this novel was actually written in 1988. And eerily, he – like his protagonist – apparently died from a heart attack, too.

Replay is a book I will keep revisiting (or replaying!), and I will add the hard cover version to my shelf. It is a perfect precursor and companion to Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library. Both books have you revisiting key moments in your own life, wondering about different outcomes; but then restoring your confidence about not making any wrong choices, instead filling you with excitement about adventures yet to come. Much like Jeff, you, too will undergo a life-affirming experience.

For a book that is four decades old, it is surprising that it is not more widely known in popular culture with such a simple premise that predates the likes of Groundhog Day, Palm Springs and even Russian Doll.
There have apparently been attempts to develop this tale into a movie, but I doubt a screen can do justice to Ken Grimwood’s incredible masterpiece.
