In the remote mountains of Northern Alaska, Dr. Riley Middleton and her team of archeologists discover a burial site containing mummified remains dating to the last ice age. Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Publisher's Summary
A terrifying listen in classic Crichton tradition, masterfully combining the elements of a heart-pounding thriller with cutting-edge technology... The result is a tale so realistic, so scary, listeners won't be able to pause.
Deep in the middle of the Nevada desert, the Xymos Corporation has built a state-of-the-art fabrication plant, surrounded by miles and miles of nothing but cactus and coyote. Eight people are trapped inside because outside, waiting for them, looking for them, is a self-replicating, fast-evolving swarm made up of predatory molecules that they themselves created. On a singular level, the molecules are seemingly harmless, but massed together, they form an intelligent organism that is anything but benign. It's getting bigger and more powerful by the hour, and it has targeted the eight humans as prey. They must find a way to stop this creature before it gets inside.... Unless it's already too late...
Once again, Michael Crichton combines scientific brilliance with relentless pacing to create an electrifyingly chilling techno-thriller.

too much technical information
I enjoyed the first part of this book, human interest about a family and a ""house husband" but it became to cyber technical for me. Maybe just not for my baby boomer generation

Like Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds
I felt edgy all the way through this audio
I am not a fan of major scary but this book was definitely scary
I was also dubious about the escalation of the abilities of the nano particles
I could believe it if it was in nature but not man made
That’s what I hope, otherwise future generations are in for a torrid time
Men can’t be trusted to govern appropriately, let alone make this sort of leap forward

Thought provoking science fiction
I normally don't go for science fiction stories but I it was the editors pick so I wanted to give it a go. At first I didn't find the story very engaging but the author conveyed alot of information about nano technology and the story was building so I preserved. I'm glad I did! Its going to be a scenario that will stay with me in years to come, a timely warning to the human race to be careful of what we create & how easily things can go pear shaped. I thank the editor for this pick, it was worthy of my time.

Recommend audiobook
Like many of Crichton’s books, ‘Prey’ is quite technical and when read, one may gloss over some of the more complicated technical passages, thereby missing some crucial information. However, listening to the audiobook, you hear those passages and the following explanation of the technology and understand clearly.
George Wilson is an excellent narrator, conveying the feeling of fear and foreboding as the story progresses and I’ll happily listen to any other audiobooks in which he is involved.
I certainly recommend ‘Prey’ both as a novel and as an audiobook but I did, in this case prefer the narrated form.
