Publisher's Summary

A beautiful, intimate and inspiring investigation into how we can find and nurture within ourselves that essential quality of internal happiness—the "light within" that Julia Baird calls "phosphorescence"—which will sustain us even through the darkest times.

Over the last decade, we have become better at knowing what brings us contentment, well-being and joy. We know, for example, that there are a few core truths to science of happiness. We know that being kind and altruistic makes us happy, that turning off devices, talking to people, forging relationships, living with meaning and delving into the concerns of others offer our best chance at achieving happiness. But how do we retain happiness? It often slips out of our hands as quickly as we find it. So, when we are exposed to, or learn, good things, how do we continue to burn with them?

And more than that, when our world goes dark, when we're overwhelmed by illness or heartbreak, loss or pain, how do we survive, stay alive or even bloom? In the muck and grit of a daily existence full of disappointments and a disturbing lack of control over many of the things that matter most—finite relationships, fragile health, fraying economies, a planet in peril—how do we find, nurture and carry our own inner, living light—a light to ward off the darkness?

Absorbing, achingly beautiful, inspiring and deeply moving, Julia Baird has written exactly the book we need for these times.

Firefly interpretations of the world around us

The most eloquent descriptors of awe and loving life

I particularly adore how well versed this non fiction book is

Julia makes facts delectable

I love the texture of the book cover

The colours the design

The inside cover

The pages are the right thickness

The font size delightful

I love how intellectual it is

But malleable

I’m not sure how many people will understand the magnitude of research that is entwined in this book

Julia is using history as a metaphor for her life

I am so impressed

Thank you for this firefly interpretation of the world around us

Epic

Brave and inspiring

I wish there were more books like this to help the many of us hidden away, leading “different lives”, struggling daily with pain and huge challenges. We can gain strength in community and in learning from each other; from different ways to cope and new things to try. Thank you Julia for your sharing and helping to light the way.

A must read during lockdown.

I so enjoyed this book! It’s relevant for all adults, beautifully read by Julia and leaves you mulling over it’s wisdom long after the final chapter.Julia is ego free and generous with her anecdotal stories and well researched facts. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Uplifting and thought provoking

This book was a careful mix of personal experience (of which Julia has endured so much) and world class research. It is a glorious book with so many twists an turns. Read or listen and let Julia take you on this miraculous adventure.

A most original book, well read by the author

I was half expecting this to partly consist of phony new-age material - despite having seen Julia Baird as a hard-nosed TV presenter. It was just the title that put me off - but it's a good title really, I now realize. She has covered a great range of topics, with a fair bit towards the end about her growing up within the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, well-known for its narrowness and prejudice against both women and LGBTI people. She feels she and many other female campaigners have failed to make a dent in that Diocese's stern facade, but we live in hope that one day it will allow women to be ordained priests, and admit LGBTI people to worship in their churches. We could all do with greater openness to phosphorence.

Not what I was expecting!

I really had no idea what this book was about or who Julia was…but after seeing the cover EVERYWHERE, I thought I’d give it a go. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. In fact, I went out and purchased 3 hard copies to send to friends and family.
Julia’s voice is so calm and easy to understand.
I was addicted.

You can take the woman out of The North Shore can’t take The North Shore out of the woman!

Baird’s memoir of her rediscovering the beauty of luminescent life forms, both literally & metaphorically, following a painful cancer diagnosis is both sobering & life affirming. The preachiness tone ‘ditch the gym & go for a swim/commune with nature’ is good for those who live in affluent suburbs near a beach is grating but not overridden by the sincerity of her message to appreciate life & how one can develop resilience even when there appears to be no light to be seen on the horizon.
