Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she’d missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. Friendships were hard, relationships harder and the office was a fluorescent-lit nightmare of anxiety. It wasn’t until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus. Clem reflects as an autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, from the asphalt playground of St Joseph's Primary School in Melbourne to working as an entertainment journalist in Hollywood.

With so many affected, it is time to revisit our perceptions of people with disabilities. Psychologist and educator Thomas Armstrong illuminates a new understanding of neuropsychological disorders. He argues that if they are a part of the natural diversity of the human brain, they cannot simply be defined as illnesses. Armstrong explores the evolutionary advantages, special skills, and other positive dimensions of these conditions.

Publisher's Summary
What is autism: a devastating developmental condition, a lifelong disability, or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius?
In truth it is all of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Following on from his groundbreaking article 'The Geek Syndrome', Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.
Going back to the earliest autism research and chronicling the brave and lonely journey of autistic people and their families through the decades, Silberman provides long-sought solutions to the autism puzzle while casting light on the growing movement of 'neurodiversity' and mapping out a path towards a more humane world for people with learning differences.

All about the history of autism, the misconceptions, and horrid ways children were treated. This book took me weeks to listen to. I couldn't put it down and would often cook dinner listening to it. It has made me interested in learning more about autism. I totally recommend this book to anyone in medical and education fields.

Hard listening but worth it.
This was well worth the time and effort to listen to. As much as the material was harrowing to hear at times, I felt the author did provide a good history of Autism recognition amd diagnosis. It has certainly given me a much deeper understanding. The reader was well chosen too with clear differentiation in the voices of the various people mentioned. Be prepared for this book to trigger a lot of emotions. Some quite difficult to work through but again worth the effort.

Very interesting & quite heartbreaking in places. The history of the diagnosis & treatment of the autistic & Aspergers spectrum of conditions. The treatment of these children in the past was quite horrific.

Essential and Exceptional Book on all aspects of autism
Excellent overview of autism, as it is experienced by autistics, and how parents, the medical professions and society at large have responded to autism over time - fascinating listening. Well balanced and always interesting. Thank god that autistics have claimed their own voice with willing allies - it’s as it should be - a challenge and a gift that needs accomodations not a sentence to be extinguished, cured or mourned. Loved it and highly recommend to anyone wanting a broad and thoughtful take on the history, politics and personal stories of autism. The narrator had a great voice and I really enjoyed listening to him - he effectively tried on lots of different voices and the only ones he didn’t quite pull off were women - but hey it’s a small quibble easily overlooked. Essential reading - great listening!

Neurotribes - Feels like home
What an amazing, confronting journey!
There are dark waters to wade through as we trace autism’s history however come the end of the book you will either leave with a greater sense of autism, it’s strengths and how to better think of their differences or perhaps a feeling of belonging as you find your missing pieces.
I’m sad this book is over, it was a long journey but by god I’m glad I read it.
