Publisher's Summary

Nominated for the Booker Prize 2019.

Shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favourite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her 'missing' boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realise they're perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it. Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite has written a deliciously deadly debut that's as fun as it is frightening.

brilliant

loved this book, it was so entertaining and surprisingly oddball. I doubt the subject matter would be for everyone but I'm not easily put off by serial killers. Narrator was awesome

Fantastic story!

This is a fantastic and compelling story, coupled with great narration. Four and a half hours long so I whipped through it pretty quickly. definitely worth a listen!

Too short but a good story

I liked the story but it was too short. I didn't realise that this is more a novella and as such the ending came too soon. The narrator was good. Due to the shortness of the book and that I didn't feel the book was worth a full credit, I gave it 3 stars, although 3.5 stars would be more appropriate.

Love, loyalty, lies

A gorgeously written novella, not a word wasted. Deftly developed story and characters, and just enough nuanced twists to create surprise. Excellent narration.

Suprisingly entertaining and bewildering

The narrator’s performance added the depth to the characters of the story. It was captivating to listen to Korede, the older sister’s narration and perception of encounters, moments and of course the murders. Told in a candid, light and matter-of-fact tone it feels like there so much more to read in between what the characters say and what they perceived to have happen. I couldn’t give it 5 stars ‘cause I cannot figure out the abrupt ending of the story. I only started figuring out the irony of which sister is really the serial killer and feel like I’m missing something. But all in all a refreshing story and perspective one that will keep you hooked ‘til the end.

Quirky, touching and unsettling

Loved it from start to finish. Went searching for more by this author but self no more yet. Thought provoking for me with two very different sisters and a family split due to one. Love love loved this book!

Entertaining and different

Despite the title, the book is more about the relationship between the sisters, rather than murders. This means it’s a surprisingly ‘light’ read, with humor, drama and suspense.
The different country also provides an refreshing background to the story.
Should be made into a movie!

lt Didn't Thrill Me

There was time when, I wanted her to confess about her sister killing those man and she had opportunists but that was never going to happen. I could see where it was going, there wasn't a shock factor for me. I didn't mind the the narrator, she blended well with the story.

Enjoyable but I wanted more!

It was an easy read and very engaging. I did wish the author provided the reader with more details of the previous murders and how she got away with it each time. Also, did their mother ever have an inkling???

I would have also liked a more satisfying ending for the protagonist - her position from the start to the end of the book didn't change much... She just seemed resigned?

It would have also been interesting to know how much the serial killer sister threw her big sister under the bus... How far did it go?

Either way, recommended for an easy read! Maybe a part two?!
