Story
Richard Nixon opens with young navy lieutenant "Nick" Nixon returning from the Pacific and setting his cap at Congress, an idealistic dreamer seeking to build a better world. Yet amid the turns of that now legendary 1946 campaign, Nixon's finer attributes quickly gave way to unapologetic ruthlessness. It is a stunning overture to John A. Farrell's magisterial portrait of a man who embodied postwar American cynicism.

Story
Candid and compelling, A Bigger Picture is the definitive narrative of Malcolm Turnbull’s prime ministership. He describes how he legalised same-sex marriage, established Snowy Hydro 2.0, stood up to Donald Trump and many achievements – remarkable in their pace and significance, and that they were delivered in the teeth of so much opposition. But it’s far more than just politics. Turnbull’s life has been filled with colourful characters and controversies, success and failure.

Story
Between 2013 and 2022, Tony Abbott begat Malcolm Turnbull, who begat Scott Morrison. For nine long years, Australia was governed by a succession of Coalition governments rocked by instability and bloodletting, and consumed with prosecuting climate and culture wars while neglecting policy. By the end, among his detractors—and there were plenty—Morrison was seen as the worst prime minister since Billy McMahon. Morrison failed to accept the mantle of national leadership, or to deal adequately with the challenges of natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet Kissinger was also reviled by large segments of the American public, ranging from liberal intellectuals to conservative activists. Kissinger explores the relationship between this complex man's personality and the foreign policy he pursued.

Story
Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

Story
There was a huge upsurge of global interest in US politics during the Trump presidency, culminating in the November 2020 election, the victory of the Democrat candidate Joe Biden and the subsequent, horrifying response in the storming of the US capitol. American politics is likely to remain deeply divided during the coming years and also the focus of global attention - with Trump mobilising his base for 2024. But the transatlantic fascination with the role and office of the US president isn't new at all and in fact reaches all the way back to the birth of the United States itself.

Good but too (relatively) short.
Maybe its because I just finished listening to Volume 1 of Barack Obama's book (27 hours mind you), this book was just too short. He glosses over events that were critical in history with passing comments. Certainly could have delved into the detail.
Anyway, a sign of a good book is did I want more, and the answer is Yes.
Enjoy.

Don't buy Abridged - Great read ruined.
Unfortunately unabridged is not available in all regions and the abridged version cuts out so much of the original book that it detracts from this great read. If you think the abridged version will give a good summary of the Clinton years think again and go and but the hardcopy book instead.

Insightful
I enjoyed this book.
The author bravely tackles tough subjects with candour.
I venture to say Obama didn’t read/listen to this before he stood for President, as he maybe would have not bothered. The obstruction and rank stupidity that the author encountered from the other side of politics sounded eerily similar to the challenges that comprised Obama’s presidency.
I would certainly be interested in a sequel, covering the subsequent years of the author along with his thoughts on what has transpired since he was in charge. (Did someone say “Deficit”?)
Doubtless the author would also have well considered views on big picture issues such as tackling global warming.
