Story
For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Story
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

Most diet books teach you to set short-term weight loss goals. Whether low-carb or low-fat, the typical plan goes like this: restrict your food choices, exercise until exhaustion, and swallow stacks of supplements. These “solutions” do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you. Meanwhile, the healthcare industry fails to prevent chronic disease. Rather than showing people how to remain healthy and prevent illness through proper nutrition, the system offers drugs and surgery to manage symptoms.

Cancer as a Metabolic Disease addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the hallmarks of cancer, and thus his theory was discredited. This audiobook aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requiring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention.

Story
Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Story
Modern humans are the most overweight, depressed, medicated and addicted cohort of adults that has ever lived, yet life has never been so good! Our sedentary lifestyles and ultra-processed foods are making us overweight and sick. Our thermoneutral environments are making us soft. Our digital world is leaving us physically disconnected. Clearly, something is wrong with modern life. The solution? Embrace discomfort. This audiobook explores the science behind counting your steps, cold showers, intermittent fasting, ‘digital sunsets’, and much, much more.
Publisher's Summary
It's not what you eat that's damaging your health; it's how that food is 'made'. The truth behind ultra-processed food that the food industry doesn't want you to know.
Did you know that 62 per cent of the food in our supermarkets is not only processed but 'ultra-processed' (ingredients from other foods are combined to make something 'new', often in colours that do not exist in nature) and that data shows that by eating this kind of food over time we are literally slowly poisoning ourselves?
In the hard-hitting, groundbreaking tradition of his NY Times best seller Fat Chance, which revealed the dangers of sugar, Dr Robert Lustig persuasively presents a stark exposé of how our addiction to processed foods (aided and abetted by the food industry, big ag, big pharma, institutional medicine and the government) is behind the lethal increase in major non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, cancer and dementia. We have come to accept that these chronic diseases are simply part of the 'natural ageing process', but Dr Lustig makes the case that this is simply not true.
The solution on both a personal and societal level is a return to unprocessed food, and Dr Lustig offers a doable plan for us to heal and restore our own health and well-being with real food, and in the process boosting our immunity to viruses like COVID-19.

Excellent wake-up call!
Loved the book content and the narration. Timely wake-up call to what goes on with food companies and pharmaceutical companies to keep selling us their products. Get them all onto the real food bandwagon and get your health and vitality back fast. Lost 5 pounds during the 2 weeks I listened to this without exercising, just avoiding junk!

Too much politics, otherwise scientific
Good idea behind the book.
Concerned about folks' health.
Looks into causes, finds diet and misinformation n corporate greed to blame, along with entrenched bad science, scientists and phony professionals.
Finds much politics.
While all no doubt true, it's a bit doomy n gloomy and gets depressing.
He hopes the book'll make it digferent, it may.
Good man, good science, good intentions.
Too much irony/drama in narrator, grates at times.
Will yhis book change out a completely broken system?
Nope but folk becoming aware will.

Excellent but USA Focused
The underlying premise of the toxicity of processed food and it’s effects on the human body are excellent although many of the later topics are more relevant to the USA than other parts of the world and many of the suggested reforms focus on the USA (understandably I suppose).
The readers voice is a bit monotonic and can sometimes lull you to sleep, especially when quoting technical stats.
