Story
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema. The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. He’s perfect boyfriend material.

Publisher's Summary
When Mina receives an urgent call from her best friend back in Melbourne, her world is turned upside down. Her reclusive mother, Elaine, has left the house for the first time in 12 years.
Mina drops everything to fly home, only to discover that Elaine will not talk about her sudden return to the world, nor why she's spent so much time hiding from it. Their reunion leaves Mina raking through pieces of their painful past in a bid to uncover the truth.
Both tender and fierce, heartbreaking and funny, Kokomo is a story about how secrets and love have the power to bring us together and tear us apart.
Critic Reviews
"Hannan's Kokomo is a sharply observed novel of one woman's facade and how it falls; an undoing that is both ordinary and compelling. This debut heralds an exciting new Australian voice with a story of estrangement from kin, friendship, love, self and country - one that will be familiar to many and surprising, for it is often a shock to see one's reflection." (Anna Krien, author of Night Games and Act of Grace)
"Graceful and raw, this is a remarkable study of the forces of desire and regret. Hannan is both acute witness and masterful reporter of love in all its faulty and essential shapes. Kokomo dazzles, pierces, and stays." (Robert Lukins, author of The Everlasting Sunday)

Intriguing
A story that is an easy listen - always journeying through relatable moments in a very descriptive way.

Enjoyable read
This book had something to say about the intricacies of families and love but I felt it was a little slow to say it. Generally an entertaining read.

Great book, hated the ending
I really loved this book. Didn’t expect too. Hated the ending though. It sort of just, well stops and I had so many questions….

An evocative book that really felt like Melbourne.
I didn’t buy all of the dialogue. Felt a little clunky and unrealistic at parts but overall excellent narration.

Poor story. More suited to a young adult audience
I found the characters to be a little pathetic. Certainly not strong women. The story really wasn't great either.
