Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

Publisher's Summary
Face your demons...or feed them.
Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war - and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.
Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried - and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.
Enter the Grishaverse with this new novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author Leigh Bardugo.
"Deadly clever political intrigue, heart-stopping adventure, memorable characters, and several understated, hinted-at romances (how will we wait?!) come together in one glorious, Slavic-folklore infused package. Bardugo's star continues to rise." (Booklist, starred review)
Critic Reviews
"Whether listeners are coming to this universe of demons and saints for the first time or the sixth, [narraotr Lauren] Fortgang is the perfect guide through a fictional countryside full of hard-to-pronounce places in the snowy north of some alternate version of Eastern Europe. The accents range from Russian to Czech to American. Fortgang's linguistic gifts trick listeners into thinking this book has multiple narrators. As the characters unearth their inner darkness and inner light, Fortgang's narration drips with both sorrow and love. The breathtaking ending begs those who are new to the universe to start at the beginning and those who have returned to start again." (AudioFile Magazine)

Enjoyable
Great performance and great writing. l love the characters, they seem so real. l was not quite sold on the story and it did not end like l would have liked it to end, but that is personal opinion.

Nikolai, I'll be your queen...
I struggled to be interested in this for the first half and I don't know why - possibly as I had just reread the whole series back to back and by book 6 I was a little bored? I love the characters and the story was good, so I persevered. Things started to get interesting half way through and by the last quarter the book I was hooked. I died a little in the last chapter... Keen for the next one.
I also adored the little throw back to Beauty and the beast "and whatever the grey stuff was, it was delicious"

gripping ❣️
loved the story.
it's human and it keeps you wanting more.
the narrator is so utterly good. she has vocal variation, enough to make us believe in different characters but not too much.
I'm buying the next book too.

Absolutely amazing how far it's come
I initially began the Shadow and Bone trilogy because of the Netflix series. I confess, I did not care at all for Shadow and Bone. I'm glad I persevered, though. The trilogy gets better, but it's the world building that is its real strength.
After finishing the Shadow & Bone trilogy, I felt the world had potential so I continued on. I made a mistake and jumped straight King of Scars, bypassing the Six of Crows duology. This means I have been slightly lost on one of the main characters, Nina, and I recommend anyone else read the series in correct order.
That said, King of Scars is AMAZING. The world bulding all pays off, multiple storylines across multiple counties, each with their own dangers and cultures etc. Each storyline is compelling. The true triumph, however, is that the characters, Nina, Zoya, Nikolai, and Hanna, and even the side characters like Issac, Genya et al are all far more interesting than Alina, from the original trilogy.
I knew that I was right about the Grishaverse. The universe is amazing, it simply needed better characters than Alina & Mal. I mean, Mal wasn't the worst, but he wasn't nearly as interesting. I haven't spoiled too much. Check this book out, it'll blow you away.
I think Netflix will most likely continue with their mix of Six of Crows and the original trilogy for season 2. of Shadow and Bone. However, I truly hope that eventually they get to the storylines of King of Scars, because it'll be out of this world. Assuming they get a crazy budget.

Amazing
An amazing 3rd story to this universe. Definitely need to read the other books before hand to get a better understanding of the universe. As the universe and character building in the previous books really help understanding in this book.
**now for a spoiler allert**
I literally got chills when I realised that Jasper's mother was the one who healed Leoni.
My all time favourite Characters across all the books are Nina and Nikolai.
I do truly feel a bit frustrated at the fact they cast Isaak as one of the characters to follow in this story I was almost bored by him, sad to see him dead but I just wasn't as interested in the story line as much as I was with everyone else. We could of been following the same story though Genya's eyes. I hope that in rule of wolves we see the story though her eyes .. well eye.
I am also interested in how the powers and laws of the powers are changing.
I used to find zoya annoying but now alot less so since we have more of her back story and why she is they way she is I have more respect for her.

entertaining
I already knew that this is a good book as recommended by Eva Chen. I was so excited to see this in Amazon audible. I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of building up each characters and I am now hooked. The second book is starting pretty good. I highly recommend for those who are good with imagining characters. Zoya is my favourite character. Love love this!

Nikolai
Nikolai is a great character in the first three Grisha books so this was worth reading and Bardugo writes this world well- especially from multiple POV characters. Lots of twists and turns and the King's affection for Zoya is fabulous

Needs previous books to be read first
Complex background that has been built up through previous books.
The story is a good one, once you get into it.
The characters are full of magic and play to their strengths.
There are plots that characters play out in the same time frame which are essential to the overall story.
