Love is in the air when five sisters discover that a wealthy and eligible bachelor is suddenly within reach. But it is his friend, the haughty Mr. Darcy, who becomes smitten. Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.

Publisher's Summary
"I think the reason we're so struck by [Jane Eyre] is how Charlotte Brontë manages to relate, expertly, what it means to be a human being...and that never changes." (Narrator Thandiwe Newton)
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety. Performing the early Victorian novel with great care and respect, actress Thandiwe Newton (Crash, The Pursuit of Happyness) draws out Jane Eyre's intimacy and depth while conveying how truly progressive Brontë was in an era of extreme restraint.
Critic Reviews
"Narrator Thandie Newton gives a delightful performance of this beloved classic. She delivers the voice of Jane from childhood to adulthood with elegant conviction, breezing through the dense sentences as if they were part of a contemporary novel." (AudioFile)
"[Thandie Newton’s] taut British diction makes a one-woman play out of the orphan girl’s love story, which starts out with all the young-adult tropes - the poor, good-hearted child abused by the spoiled, wealthy boy and his classist keepers, each distinguished by his or her own idiosyncratic cadence - but progresses into what many consider the prototypical Victorian novel. Written in 1847, not long before the start of the American Civil War, the novel makes repeated comparisons between Jane’s captivity, as an impoverished girl in a rich family’s home, and slavery. Newton’s exasperated and aptly melodramatic delivery of Jane’s accusation that her cruel stepbrother is 'like a slave-driver' is a knowing contemporary wink at this timeless yet dated classic." Such a lovely old love story
I wanted to read an old novel while on holiday, my husband also enjoyed listening to the beautiful old style language and appreciated the morals and stoic ways. Was much more enjoyable having someone read to me than the time many years ago when i read it to myself. Excellent reader.

Unlike any other and has stood the test of time
Having read Jane Eyre a number of years ago and discovered it to be one of my favourite books, I wanted to experience it again, this time through narration. Thandie Newton's performance is remarkable, and sweeps you off into Bronte's world where you feel as if you could almost reach out and touch the characters.

Always more in a book
Thandie Newton's narration is spectacular. I don't know how they hop from one voice to another like that with barely a breath between. It makes the audio method yet another good way to consume a well-loved classic like this, which I first read at school more than half a century ago, and seen countless TV dramatisations. Go on. Treat yourself.

Excellent narration
After watching the films multiple times I’ve decided to give the actual book a try (should’ve been the other way around I suppose, silly me) and am completely surprised how much they have left out! A strong female lead in a time where such independence would have been so hard to attain, Bronte’s writing is beautifully woven from the protagonist perspective and so easily to enjoy. The narrator as well has done the wonderful work of bringing these characters to life.

Dated but still classically wonderful
Beautifully performed this classic tale is brought back to life. My one caveat is the use of the original dated language which includes some rather racist terms, including a soft jesting use of a derivitive of the N word.
