Story
As a child Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating - and waiting for suitable prey.

Publisher's Summary
The second novel of the Forerunner Saga trilogy by science-fiction legend Greg Bear - set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!
One hundred thousand years ago. In the wake of the apparent self-destruction of the alien Forerunner empire, two humans - Chakas and Riser - are like flotsam washed up on very strange shores indeed. Captured by the Forerunner known as the Master Builder and then misplaced during a furious battle in space, Chakas and Riser now find themselves on an inverted world where horizons rise into the sky and humans of all kinds are trapped in a perilous cycle of horror and neglect. They have become both research animals and strategic pawns in a cosmic game whose madness knows no end - a game of ancient vengeance between the powers who seeded the galaxy with life and the Forerunners who expect to inherit their sacred Mantle of Responsibility to all living things.
In the company of a young girl and an old man, Chakas begins an epic journey across a lost and damaged Halo ringworld in search of a way home, an explanation for the warrior spirits rising up within, and the reason for the Forerunner Librarian’s tampering with human destiny. Their travels will take them into the domain of a powerful and monstrous intelligence - known as “the Captive” by Forerunners and “the Primordial” by ancient human warriors, this being may not only control the fate of Chakas, Riser, and the rest of humanity, but of all sentient life across the galaxy....

Great book
It did a great job expanding the lore behind the forerunners and choosing Timothy Dadabo as the narrator was fitting.

Narrator
They shouldn't have changed the narrator from the first book it is jarring to listen too when you listen to the trilogy in order and the first narrator was better in my opinion.

Pedantic
hours is sections of landscaping which has no bearing on the story. Drudgery.
Characters are a little silly, Riser, the 10,000 year old 12 year old boy. I think I'm going to get a refund on this one.

Not an integral part of the hall universe
Story drags on and doesn’t expand on the universe. Completely unnecessary story and waste of money

Very slow
The story was informative but very slow. There was about zero of the action I expect in a halo book.

Slow and boring
The entire first part of this book pretty much repeats the what had happened in halo cryptum no real new information is given. Thereafter we follow three humans walk across a halo for the better part of 3 hrs and nothing happens until the final chapters of the book.
