Publisher's Summary
Abigail Sorensen has spent her life trying to unwrap the events of 1990. It was the year she started receiving random chapters from a self-help book called The Guidebook in the post. It was also the year Robert, her brother, disappeared on the eve of her 16th birthday. She believes the absurdity of The Guidebook and the mystery of her brother's disappearance must be connected.
Now 35, owner of The Happiness Café and mother of four-year-old Oscar, Abigail has been invited to learn the truth behind The Guidebook at an all-expenses-paid retreat. What she finds will be unexpected, life-affirming, and heartbreaking.
Critic Reviews
“Astonishingly wonderful and magical and moving and uplifting and different.” (Marian Keyes)
“A brilliant, beautiful, hilarious, heart-breaking, extraordinary book. I say this without bias, only awe.” (Liane Moriarty)

Close but not quite
I did listen to the whole book but I nearly gave up a few times! I was really interested in certain aspects of the story and others bored me... it could have been so good! Too many lists and too much child-talk!

Wonderful. Just wonderful
I just loved this book. The narrator was perfect - her intonation so well matched with Abby. The capture of the nonsensical conversations a mother has with her 4 year old child....The pain of loss.... The everyday metaphors of life. My new favourite listen

A great story. Beautifully woven and read well.
Surprising twists and turns; folly and real life intertwined. Unusual story base, but loved it.

Metaphors and whimsy
An uplifting novel full of poetry and metaphors. I connected with Abigail’s grief in a hopeful way. The reader was outstanding and her delivery of the streams of consciousness which were scattered throughout the book really set the mood.

Interesting concept and great heart but over long
I really wanted to like this book. It seemed to want to say something quite profound and lovely about loss, moving on, imagination and wonder. Yet it seemed to get so bogged down in trajectories that added little value I just grew bored. The book ended up never arriving at any depth.

Worst book I have ever read
This book started out so promisingly. Then gradually became a tedious, painfully pointless, poorly written story. I kept hoping it would get better but it never did. I can never get those hours of my life back.

Couldn’t finish.
I tried to like this book. I listened to about half way before I finally gave up, I could not pick up on an actual storyline and it was becoming tedious.
