The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this...should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency."

For all the thousands of books that have been written about religion, few until this one have attempted to examine it scientifically: to ask why - and how - it has shaped so many lives so strongly. Is religion a product of blind evolutionary instinct or rational choice? Is it truly the best way to live a moral life? Ranging through biology, history, and psychology, Daniel C. Dennett charts religion’s evolution from “wild” folk belief to “domesticated” dogma.

Story
The Blind Watchmaker, knowledgably narrated by author Richard Dawkins, is as prescient and timely a book as ever. The watchmaker belongs to the 18th-century theologian William Paley, who argued that just as a watch is too complicated and functional to have sprung into existence by accident, so too must all living things, with their far greater complexity, be purposefully designed. Charles Darwin's brilliant discovery challenged the creationist arguments; but only Richard Dawkins could have written this elegant riposte.

It is also a sparkling addition to Dawkins's own remarkable canon of work.

Story
Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

a voice of reason amongst our accepted insanity

Publisher's Summary
From the introduction by Dan Barker: Millions of good people live moral, happy, loving, meaningful lives without believing in a god.
Oprah said it was 17 years, but it was actually 19 years between my first sermon at the age of 15 and my last sermon at the age of 34. Part 1 of Godless, "Rejecting God", tells the story of how I moved from devout preacher to atheist and beyond. Part 2, "Why I Am an Atheist", presents my philosophical reasons for unbelief. Part 3, "What's Wrong with Christianity", critiques the bible (its reliability as well as its morality) and the historical evidence for Jesus. Part 4, "Life Is Good!", comes back to my personal story, taking a case to the United States Supreme Court, dealing with personal trauma, and experiencing the excitement of Adventures in Atheism.

This book explains why I'm an athiest and even though Richard Dawkins wants you to read this to talk to Christians... I think it would be the best book for Christians to read to talk to Athiests.

An overall criticism of Christianity from one who knew that world.
If you want this book in a nutshell it would be, I was a devoted 100% Christian and now I want to tell you what I preached was wrong and this is how and why. Plus a few extra bits and pieces about evolution and self control.
It’s mainly for Christians, I’d say, unless you have a deep interest in the Bible and understand how central it is to a life of faith.
It started off strong and was very interesting as he allowed his feelings out. Some of the nitty-gritty after that was lost on an audio version as I’m assuming there were lists and visual comparisons of words that would have made it easier. A lot of questions to answer that were given time and compelling argument. Because he has believed it, it made it easier to disprove it. It certainly is an eye opener.
Towards the end there was less biblical elements and more social evolution based deductions.
It was presented very well with measured tone. Dan Barker is a great speaker so there’s no problem there.
All in all, a great book for helping Christian’s that are starting to question break the ties of fear, old limiting beliefs and dogma and think free.

Mind-opening!
it was really long, but the mind-opening gems in this life narrative resonated with my own awakening from religious dogma. Dan Barker just says it much more eloquently.
I felt the text was reasoned without being judgemental or condescending.

Long and slow
The content is sound, technically well researched. Just found it very long-winded with unnecessary padding and repetition. The narrator spoke slowly and deliberately, tending to be boring.
