What is the Rachel incident? When Rachel falls in love with her married professor, Dr. Byrne, her best friend James helps her devise a plan to seduce him. But as the plot becomes increasingly complicated, their friendship is tested by impossible choices and a lie that can't be taken back. Chaotic and brilliantly funny, The Rachel Incident perfectly captures the turmoil of young love.

Plea for Cutting For Stone!
- By karenf on 14-05-2023
Publisher's Summary
Frances is an artist in her forties living a quiet life in a remote mountain town in NSW, far away from the glittering lights and famous personalities of the Sydney art world she once knew. When an invitation arrives from a former lover to attend his exhibition at a state gallery, Frances is plunged back into the past, where a single irrevocable act changed the course of her story.
Told across two time periods, Frances's story wrestles with themes of power and privilege, womanhood and motherhood, artistic doubt, the male gaze upon the female body, and the commodification of art. It looks at the fraught relationships between artists and their muses, the sacrifices of a life devoted to art, and asks if it is ever really possible for two ambitious artists to thrive in one relationship.

So much more than a love story between two artists
I inhaled this book in one go. I absolutely loved the tension and power dynamic between artist lovers Frances and Clem, but I also loved Kylie Needham's delicate observation and unpicking of the complicated relationships artists have with their work, their gallerists and class factors within the Australian art world. It is absolutely spot on. So much Australian art history is seamlessly woven into this story. Arlie Dodds's narration is brilliant too.

An engaging story of artists and their world
I listened to this as an audiobook and managed to listen on an entire car journey from start to finish! I enjoyed the art scene - all the phraseology was accurate. There is much to be foraged from this world of artists and galleries!
I enjoyed the fact that the character wasn’t too filled in initially and that there was much to look forward to as the story revealed itself. I thought the descriptions were poetic, and that there was enough restraint in parts - ie not too much blatant description particularly with the sex scenes. I would recommend this book particularly to Australians.
