Publisher's Summary

The book we've all (certainly every woman between 25 and 75) been waiting for. Classy, chic, convincing, funny, wise, well-written and very timely. It's the ultimate non-diet book, which nonetheless shows us how to eat with balance, control and above all pleasure.

Chuck out all the radical diet books, think about what you eat and why, and then enjoy eating the right things (and some of the wrong ones) intelligently, and in smaller portions. Eat, like a French woman, with your head not your stomach.

Guiliano, French-born and bred, gets the tone absolutely right. She succeeds in that rare high-wire act of being really serious about her subject but without taking herself too seriously; manages to encourage and inspire and amuse, without being bossy or earnest. This is a book that will make you laugh out loud and yet have you following several of her practical precepts within days - everyone who reads it becomes evangelical (French women don't go to the gym, they climb the stairs-). It combines just the right balance of memoir, wisdom, wit, delicious recipes, and French common sense.

Guiliano emphasizes the virtues of freshness, variety, personal taste, enjoyment and, above all, portion control (research shows that dishes served in US restaurants are 25% larger than those served in restaurants in France!).

Beautifully read, and refreshingly wonderful to have a woman reader, both the words, philosophy and the voice are music to the ears for every woman. Thoroughly enjoyed reading and listening to this book.

Very interesting & inspiring but...

I found this book to be very interesting & inspiring with lots of stories & anecdotes to keep me listening. Listening to the recipes read out loud got a bit dry but mainly because all the measurements were given in pounds which had me constantly trying to convert 1 pound to 453.6, say 454 grams and then to kilograms for the even bigger numbers. At times I'd use 500 grams to simplify the maths but then be wondering by how much I'd overestimated, then realise I'd missed the next couple of sentences and ingredients. In the end I ignored the measurements but I think this took away the impact of some of the stories. At the very least, given the metric system has been the international standard since about 1957 and the US standard since 1997, both imperial & metric values should've been stated. Otherwise good to listen to and I will listen again, though ready to pause with pen & paper in hand.

Really Enjoyed This Book

Couldn't stop listening... although maybe reading through all the recipes was a bit tedious.. lol
But apart from that, this book had a great flow, was engaging & easy to follow.
Full of wonderful advice, although maybe not the low fat part, I would advocate full fat, the advice was pretty straightforward & sensible.
One story in particular took me back to my childhood, I loved how it did that.. shared experiences.
This book harks back to a simple time in France in reguard to eating, as now unfortunately France is also succumbing to the processed diet that so many of us are enduring.
Basically keep your food simple, eat low carb & watch your treats.
Don't eat overly processed foods, everything (meaning good quality food) in moderation.
That eating isn't about going on a diet, it is about diet, as in how & what we eat.
That eating just isn't just about eating, but rather a more diverse topic that incorporates our emotions, our senses & our feelings... it's about taking time out to make it a ritual.. that our lives need to slow down, we need to encounter each meal with gratitude & learn to saviour each bite, each sip.
My nan was the epitome of this, always classy whether eating alone, with family, friends or socially ect..
I listened to this book & it brought me back to her, analysing, picturing & remembering.. that small glass of sherry in the afternoon.
Fresh, well cooked foods, not overly fussy... unfortunately as is the French way back them, I'm sure she was so slim because she smoked, but she also walked a lot & lived will into her 90's before smoking killed her... yes I know she was 90's... buy it was smoking that caused her to have a leg amputated & that killed her, not old age!
She ate butter & cream ... coming from Normandy way.
Anyway I'm starting to write a novel myself :P
I so loved this book, I'm actually going to buy it so I have a copy & try some of the recipes mentioned.
Get back to healthy, simple lifestyle & cut down on my carbs.. stop looking for the quick fix diet of dieting that has put me where I am & start enjoying food & life again.
Pop that champagne cork to have a glass with dinner, eat berries & Greek yoghurt & occasionally splash out on a pain au chocolait... not obsess about breakfast & eat enough protein & good quality fats so I don't need to snack!
