Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Story
Raised as a fourth-generation farmer, when Will Harris inherited White Oak Pastures he was a full-time commodity cowboy who played hard and fast with every tool the system offered–chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, and more. His ancestors had built a highly profitable, conventionally run machine, but over time he found himself disgusted with the excess, cruelty, and smalltown devastation this system entailed. So he bet the farm on forging a different way of doing things. One that works with nature not against it, and bridges the quickly widening delta between consumers and their food.

Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Story
Soil is the unlikely story of our most maligned resource as swashbuckling hero. A saga of bombs, ice ages and civilisations falling. Of ancient hunger, modern sicknesses and gastronomic delight. It features poison gas, climate collapse and a mind-blowing explanation of how rain is formed. For too long, we've not only neglected the land beneath us, we've squandered and debased it, by over-clearing, over-grazing and over-ploughing.

Publisher's Summary
From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. Here, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have big impacts.
>Salatin, hailed by the New York Times as "Virginia's most multifaceted agrarian since Thomas Jefferson [and] the high priest of the pasture", and profiled in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Food, Inc. and the best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma, understands what food should be: wholesome, seasonal, raised naturally, procured locally, prepared lovingly, and eaten with a profound reverence for the circle of life.
And his message doesn't stop there. From child-rearing to creating quality family time, to respecting the environment, Salatin writes with a wicked sense of humor and true storyteller's knack for the revealing anecdote.
Salatin's crucial message and distinctive voice - practical, provocative, scientific, and down-home philosophical in equal measure - makes Folks, This Ain't Normal a must-listen book.

Salatin is the Gandhi of regenerative agriculture
This hook needs to be part of all schools curriculum. Salatin explain how the green revolution has disconnected us from our food and hence the natural world and how we can get back there with tangible steps at the end of each chapter. Salatin does so in an eloquent and entertaining way with everything being backed up by research. Highly recommended!

'Normal' An historical guide
This book was full of truth, transparency, accountability, and self responsibility.
Half a century of life experience, transforming his farm, from rock pile, to lush pasture, traditionally mentored, well read, articulate, simultaneously caring, while calling out utter abhorrent mentality and naivity of certian thinking.
This book is for everyone that is even remotely interested in what they eat, &/or, how (their) food is grown, harvested, processed, distributed, consumed. awaken to the labeling lies and legalities that government agencies allow big business to get away with- protecting big $$$, over a persons right to know what they are consuming, all the while, trampling over, and sendng extinct, every small enterprise, and even our individual right to buy or sell, a quiche, soup, or fresh milk, hand milked, to your parent, child, friend or neighbour!
Do yourself a favour, and listen to this audiobook!

So close….
As a hobby farmer and clearly what Joel calls an animal worshipper, I take pride in my animal management, and that includes respecting the animal through its life, and it’s death.
I could get past the bit where he talks about a good old-fashioned hog Kill’n, but when he said that cutting throats of animals was the most humane way to slaughter, I was out.
I don’t care, how you frame it, dying from having your throat cut is not humane.
Such a shame, as there are so so so many things in this book that he has articulated brilliantly.
Still worth a listen as I took away many good points .
