Story
Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Story
The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Connelly's latest is "a grabber from the beginning...utterly compelling."

Story
The man most hated by the LAPD - a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers - has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation. The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement.

Publisher's Summary
Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realises he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he's ever encountered.
McEvoy investigates - against the warnings of the police and his own editor - and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. But his inquiry hits a snag when he himself becomes a suspect.
As he races to clear his name, McEvoy's findings point to a serial killer working under the radar of law enforcement for years and using personal data shared by the victims themselves to select and hunt his targets.

Quick paced and exciting did it again by Connelly
Like good Michael Connelly books, this one is intriguing and fast paced. 10 hours went by in a flash. A bit disappointed at the end (don't want to spoil the story) or would have been 5 stars.

Great story idea
Love the theme throughout the story, at times Jack can be a frustrating character, stubborn. Found the story subject interesting based around DNA and how Michael Connelly worked it around the murders. Going to check out Fair Warning now, great story.

Quite enjoyable
I enjoy this style, similar to The Scarecrow. I’ve now read every single Bosch, Haller and McEvoy book and this is one of the best. It did seem to slightly fall away too quickly in the end and having ‘listened’ to all the books, it was difficult getting past the narrator also being that of Micky Haller. The Ballard / Bosch books seem to struggle for 1 single story line and jam several cases into a book to fill it out. This was refreshing to see the older style brought back. Score overall and story would have been 4.5

Meh
Jack McEvoy is the kind of protagonist that keeps me rooting for the bad guy. He’s just such a whiner.

Not the usual Michael Connelly masterpiece
I found this story difficult to listen to. The constant use of "he said, she said" was frustrating and unnecessary. I have avidly read all of Michael Connelly's previous books and although the story had substance, this didn't feel as if it was written by him or to his usual standard (sorry Michael).
Perhaps it was just that the audible version wasn't as good as reading the book myself.
