Story
A Sunday Times number one bestseller in the United Kingdom, this is the intimate and revealing autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Margaret was born into the Scottish aristocracy, into a now almost vanished world of privilege. Royalty often came to stay, and her house was run in the style of Downton Abbey. During the Second World War, she "lodged" at Buckingham Palace while she worked for MI5.

There are few people Gyles Brandreth doesn't know or hasn't met. Now a grandparent, he traces his steps back to being a three-year-old tearing around 1950s London on his tricycle, to boarding school where he had an appendix removed simply to get out of football, to Bedales, where he met Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to balancing his growing love of theatre with his love for educating, the 'woolly jumper years', the stint as an MP, the years of close friendship with the queen, to becoming a septuagenarian Twitter star and stalwart fixture in British entertainment.

Philip - elusive, complex, controversial, challenging, often humorous, sometimes irascible - is the man Elizabeth II once described as her 'constant strength and guide'. Who was he? What was he really like? What is the truth about those 'gaffes' and the rumours of affairs? This is the final portrait of an unexpected and often much-misunderstood figure. It is also the portrait of a remarkable marriage that endured for more than 70 years.

Publisher's Summary
For fans of the Netflix series The Crown and from the New York Times best-selling author of 17 Carnations comes a captivating biography of Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret.
They were the closest of sisters and the best of friends. But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called 'Lillibet'. And bow to her wishes.
Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister's antics with a kind of stoical amusement, but Margaret's struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system - and her fraught relationship with its expectations - was often a source of tension. Famously, the queen had to inform Margaret that the church and government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee, Group Captain Peter Townsend, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title and royal allowances or her divorcee lover.
From the idyll of their cloistered early life, through their hidden war-time lives, into the divergent paths they took following their father's death and Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, this book explores their relationship over the years. Andrew Morton's latest biography offers unique insight into these two drastically different sisters - one resigned to duty and responsibility, the other resistant to it - and the lasting impact they have had on the Crown, the royal family and the ways it adapted to the changing mores of the 20th century.

The Queen and her sister Margaret
I really enjoyed this book and the narrator was quite good also.
It was interesting to learn about the lives of two sisters born into royalty but still so similar to all sisters around the world. The ups and downs, the highlights and lowlights, the happy moments and the sad moments, and the love and loyalty that overcame it all. I highly recommend giving this a listen.

dreadful narration
I couldn't finish this book because of the narration, although the chapters I did finish were well-written and interesting. But the narrator is truly awful. She seems to have two voices: one soft and even slightly seductive (inappropriate for this text) and the other very harsh (also not appropriate for the text). Compounding the problem is that she also seems to have two volumes: for the soft voice the volume is low and for the harsh voice it goes up several notches. These changes can occur from sentence to sentence. I just couldn't keep listening.

Worth considering
Interesting read but as an audio book the narrators voice is grating. I would have returned it but was unable to. Make sure you sample first and can tolerate the voice.

A good story, an unfortunate choice for narrator.
I love the royals and enjoy learning about their history, but the voice actor butchered the narration. it was insufferable and it was difficult not to throw my phone across the room every 10 minutes. The only thing that got me through it was my love for the late Queen. I've listened to a large number of audiobooks in several languages and accents, but this was the hardest female voice in an audiobook I've ever force myself to endure. Never again will I listen to Marisa Calin. If Andrew Morton updates this in future, please change the narrator.
Why not read it you say? I'm legally blind, sorry.
