Story
The world is in economic meltdown, but a mining town on the edge of nowhere is booming. With the town's population exploding, it's easy enough to hide a crime—or even a dirty past. Banished to the stock squad after the fallout from a police frame-up, Detective Senior Sergeant Cato Kwong is brought in from the cold to solve the case of a torso washed up on the wild shores of the Great Southern Ocean. When Kwong's investigation lifts the lid on the exploitation of migrant workers and disturbs an even darker criminal mind, the fallen cop faces powerful opposition.

Publisher's Summary
Sergeant Nick Chester has dodged the Geordie gangsters he once feared, is out of hiding and looking forward to a quiet life. But gold fever is creating ill feeling between prospectors, and a new threat lurks in the form of trigger-happy Americans preparing for Doomsday by building a bolthole at the top of the South Island.
As tensions simmer in the Wakamarina valley, Nick finds himself working on a cold-case murder and investigating a scandal-plagued religious sect. When local and international events reach fever pitch, Chester finds himself up against an evil that knows no borders.
This second Nick Chester crime novel is as thrilling as its award-winning predecessor, Marlborough Man.

Good story poor pronunciation
I enjoyed this book but it's clear the narrator hasn't actually spent any time in New Zealand and not enough research was done to allow him to accurate pronounce the Maori words or even just some local English dialect. For example 'bach' which is the nz term for a small holiday house is pronounce like Bach the composer where as kiwis would say it 'batch'.
it took me out of the story over and over again especially with the large number of Maori characters.
