As with all human societies, that of the Indigenous Australians is abounding in stories. Stories of how the world came to be the way it is, stories of heroism and perfidy, stories about animals and birds, and stories about love and hate all have parts to play in the wide array of myths, legends, and tales created by Indigenous Australians.

Forced to move away from her miyagan, she walks through each day with no trace of dance in her step, her broken heart forever calling her back home to Gundagai.

As eco-feminist scholar Sophie Strand discovered, these wilder, more magical modes of the masculine have always been hidden in plain sight.

Great honest storytelling
- By Anonymous User on 29-11-2018
Publisher's Summary
Soon after Billy Griffiths joins his first archaeological dig as camp manager and cook, he is hooked. Equipped with a historian’s inquiring mind, he embarks on a journey through time, seeking to understand the extraordinary deep history of the Australian continent.
Deep Time Dreaming is the passionate product of that journey. It investigates a twin revolution: the reassertion of Aboriginal identity in the second half of the 20th century and the uncovering of the traces of ancient Australia.
It explores what it means to live in a place of great antiquity, with its complex questions of ownership and belonging. It is about a slow shift in national consciousness: the deep time dreaming that has changed the way many of us relate to this continent and its enduring, dynamic human history.

I absolutely loved this presentation of Australia's deep history. It's a timely publication in view of the current political situation surrounding our first nations peoples' desire for recognition. The narrator was excellent. showing empathic understanding of his subject matter. A great listen (read).

Insightful and rewarding
As someone that lives in an Aboriginal community in central Australia I felt an urge to delve deeper into this, the hidden story of our country . Whilst it’s not told from the perspective of indigenous peoples and is intentionally done so, it truly advocates a thorough rethinking of what our country’s history really says, through western methods of archaeology and of anthropological narrative. I never found anything in this book dry or unapproachable and it did shine a light on many of the epic stories that had to happen to bring this information to us, the “ east coast” readers . There were many brave souls that ventured to the far corners of the country to piece all this together, as well as those kind enough to allow westerners to share it. I feel privilege de to have been in this regions mentioned in the book and to live and work on indigenous land. If you want more of a genuine Australian history and narrative make it your duty to listen to this .

This book, along with Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe and Australianama by Samia Khatun, should form the core of required reading of all history and Australian Studies courses. Stunning in its gentle and respectful weaving together of Aboriginal and European epistemologies. It is a model for intellectual political honesty.

Correct title: the history and evolution of archaeology in Australia
I echo the review of another reader. This is a book about the history and evolution of archaeology in Australia, it’s links to international archaeology, and how it shaped our understanding of aboriginal prehistory, and it’s place in global human evolution.
As a side effect the reader gets a macro level view of aboriginal history and culture.
The performance is quite good, and the story overall is quite interesting (if you like the theme). I did listen intensively beginning to end.

Such an important story of our place, well read!
So intriguing! I learmed so much about the philosophies of archeology and history documenting and about many of Australia's archeologists, and astonishing women, truly a world I knew nothing about and now have such respect for how they are writing our history and enabling truth telling. A really important book
And I'm grateful to have had it read to me :)
For the reading: Tom Griffiths has such gravitas and is a great reader, but I'm too fussy- I think the author, Billy Griffiths, speaks with such energy and would have been the perfect narrator!
