Story
After the puzzling death of a shopkeeper in rural Australia, troubled detective Dana Russo has just 12 hours to interrogate the prime suspect - a silent, inscrutable man found at the scene of the crime, who simply vanished 15 years earlier. Where has he been? And just how dangerous is he? Without conclusive evidence linking him to the killing, Dana must race against time to persuade him to speak.

Loved it!
- By Sheryn Williams on 04-07-2023
Publisher's Summary
Hirsch's rural beat is wide. Daybreak to day's end, dirt roads and dust. Every problem that besets small towns and isolated properties, from unlicensed driving to arson. In the time of the virus, Hirsch is seeing stresses heightened and social divisions cracking wide open. His own tolerance under strain; people getting close to the edge.
Today he's driving an international visitor around: Janne Van Sant, whose backpacker son went missing while the borders were closed. They're checking out his last photo site, his last employer. A feeling that the stories don't quite add up.
Then a call comes in: a roadside fire. Nothing much—a suitcase soaked in diesel and set alight. But two noteworthy facts emerge. Janne knows more than Hirsch about forensic evidence. And the body in the suitcase is not her son's.
‘Disher is the gold standard for rural noir.' CHRIS HAMMER
‘This is storytelling at its best… Another sophisticated and compelling offer from an author at the peak of his powers.' GOOD READING

gripping couldn't let it end
highly recommend. right until the end my hands were gripped and heart beating, looking at the timer. then dead. This boos takes you through the easy country life of the mid North then just when you think the meth heads of the town are harmless it all goes off. a fantastic read all too close to today realities . I'm still looking for the rest of this book it ended so quickly. like looking into the empty glass of a enjoyed wine for the last taste.
Do have a giggle on the pronunciation of Yatla and Lucerne. but hey we are south Aussie and farmers.
look forward to another book of Paul Hersh. Thankyou.🐄🐑🦋

Highly recommended reading!
This was the third book and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.
Steve Shanahan is such a great narrator for this character too.
Bringing Covid into the story was valid and the subject of racism was also on point.
Well written and hurry up and make this series into a tv show!!

Another great story from Garry Disher
Garry Disher writes terrific stories that have amazing sideline police matters that bring realism to the story. This is the 4th in this series and possibly the best.

Exciting and builds well
Again Disher has written a great story that develops well and sucks you in. I found a few too many ugly characters with an overall impression that rural Australia was an unpleasant place to live. However I was as always , immersed in the mystery of this story. Well done again.

Great story
A really fast moving story. The reading was a tad too fast which ruined it for me. However Gary Disher’s characters are visceral and believable. The desolation and insular nature of small country outback towns is well portrayed.
I am enjoyed this story. Thanks.
