Lovecraft wurde nach eigenen Worten durch einen Traum zu dieser Geschichte inspiriert.
Die Kurzgeschichte ist als Testament eines morphiumabhängigen Mannes angelegt, der vor seinem Selbstmord von einem grauenhaften Erlebnis erzählt, durch das er seine geistige Gesundheit verlor und drogenabhängig wurde.
