Publisher's Summary
A moving story of an old woman reckoning with memories - both cherished and heartbreaking - of her past, from French Rwandan author Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse, winner of the 2020 Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie.
In childhood, Consolata was permanently separated from her family by French colonizers in her Rwandan village. Now, nearing the end of her life in an assisted-living facility, she starts losing her French language skills and can only remember her mother tongue, to the confusion of care workers. Oscillating between moments in assisted living and vivid childhood memories with family in Rwanda, Consolota is a poignant story of heritage, memory, and bonds that can never be broken.

A beautiful story
This was a beautiful poignant story well told. So subtly getting her story across of mixed race and elderly care as well as a world of great beauty found in the day to day living. I love the way this was told. Thank you!

Powerful Story
A well written powerful story about life, family, growing old & the bonds that stay will us. I also found it heart breaking. I do not know much about the history of region it is set in. This story hits straight to core of effects of colonisation, racism & prejudice without even having to spell it out to audience just to share the simple story.

Absolutely beautiful!
I whish it was a full story, but the shortness of it made it even more precious.
Perfect choice of narrator!
