Publisher's Summary
Stuart MacBride's number one best-selling crime series opens with this award-winning debut.
DS Logan McRae and the police in Aberdeen hunt a child killer who stalks the frozen streets.
Winter in Aberdeen: murder, mayhem and terrible weather...
It's DS Logan McRae's first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn't get much worse. Three-year-old David Reid's body is discovered in a ditch: strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he's only the first. There's a serial killer stalking the Granite City, and the local media are baying for blood.
Soon the dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. And if Logan isn't careful, he could end up joining them.

Gory but gripping
This book got me through some very long work road trips and although there was a lot of gore, the characters were great and it all tied together really well. I wasn't sure whodunnit - there were lots of potential perpetrators. I enjoyed all of the twists and turns.
A little dated now - who has an answerphone? - but that wasn't off-putting at all. I really enjoyed this story. Might take a wee break from this character and listen to something light but will definitely come back to it.
Also - some funny bits, which was unexpected.

Good read
Still enjoying his books but don’t know how many more I will read. The story lines are good but the character seem to be a little stagnant in their personal lives

A REAL FIND.
Loved this book, with some insider knowledge this is as close to real police culture as it gets.
Well drawn characters and great dialogue that is not overly complex, but is simply succinct, ugly, raw and real.
Perhaps a small criticism it does become a little roller- coasterish when less is perhaps more.
I particularly liked the innocuity of the prose. I am not a fan of authors who spend paragraphs describing the countryside or the curtains. The writing is tight and not needlessly superfluous.
The narration is first class.

A great listen
This is my first Stuart MacBride book and most definitely won’t be the last.
You will find yourself engaged with the characters and storyline from the first chapter.
There is the occasional profanity, used only when necessary though. You will also notice yourself grinning at times, despite the difficult subject.
The narration, by Steve Worsley, is excellent, adding to the overall enjoyment of the book.
I highly recommend this book.

Excellent story
I love this author, this is a really good story and the characters are developed really well so it feels like we know them. It’s not a rushed story, so you can take time to enjoy the journey. Brilliant work by the narrator Steve Worsley too, such clear diction and his range of voices are not annoying as some narrators can be.
Definitely recommend listening to this book.

Gruesome, sad, disturbing, laugh out loud bits too
Logan, what a brilliant man Mr MacBride has dragged into my world. Believable (just!) characters, extremely distressing in parts, tearful moments along with laugh out loud moments, all wrapped up in a cracker of a book that spat me out at the end bedraggled and wanting more, (maybe with just a few less gruesome, grim and wretched bits in it)
Steve Worsley's narration is magic, his voices brought the characters to life. Great job Mr Worsley.
