Story
From master storyteller Bryce Courtenay comes a colorful, lusty story set in the 13th century, an epic tale of a Europe torn by religious intolerance. The story centers around Sylvia Honeyeater, who sings like an angel and can literally charm the birds from the trees. The narrative also features the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Francis of Assisi, the Muslim Sultan and his harem, and the fervor that becomes the Children's Crusade and then, later, the Crusades.

Publisher's Summary
They say no one from the convict settlement of Sydney Town crossed the steep ranges of the Blue Mountains until 1813. But the quick-witted convict Clancy Fitzgerald did it in 1798, dragging with him the proud - but reluctant - Eliza Philips. Faced with constant danger and wrenching isolation, Clancy and Eliza found themselves pale-skinned strangers in a land of ancient traditions and spiritual beliefs.

Enjoyable tale set in an extraordinary time
If you ever wondered about life as an early settler and how convicts got on when they started out with so little. Here is a tale that makes you squirm through Sydney's racial, religious and societal history when contrasted against aboriginal life. Easy listening and very well read.

Engrossing Saga
This book and its sequel is a saga set mostly in the Australian outback with some amazing and believable characters. The narration is great, especially given the many characters involved. I found the book to be engrossing and totally believable from the start. I greatly admire the skill of the author and the narrator. I strongly recommend this book and its sequel Kalinda

Ok
It was ok. Enjoyed the listen. Narration was ordinary. Narrative was ok but the dialogue was comical at best cringey and annoying at worst - it just didn’t fit the characters. Not that it was particularly well written dialogue to start with. Enjoyed the historical aspects.
