They began operations out of England in the spring of '43. They flew their Flying Fortresses almost daily against strategic targets in Europe in the name of freedom. Their astonishing courage and appalling losses earned them the name that resounds in the annals of aerial warfare and made the "Bloody Hundredth" a legend. Harry H. Crosby—soon to be portrayed by Anthony Boyle in the miniseries Masters of the Air developed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg—arrived with the very first crews, and left with the very last.

Story
Established after World War I by the Royal Australian Navy, the Coast Watchers were a loose organisation of several hundred European settlers, missionaries, patrol officers and planters living in British and Australian Pacific Island territories whose job it was to observe and report on the enemy. They were mostly all unpaid volunteers whose job it was simply to observe and report on foreign shipping and aeroplane movements. It was never envisaged that the Coast Watchers would do any fighting, nor operate inside enemy-occupied territory.

Story
When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, the British asked Australia for help. With some misgivings, the Australian government sent five destroyers to beef up the British Royal Navy in the Mediterranean. HMAS Vendetta, Vampire, Voyager, Stuart and Waterhen were old ships, small with worn-out engines. Their crews used to joke they were held together by string and chewing gum; when the Nazi propaganda minister Josef Goebbels heard of them, he sneered that they were a load of scrap iron.

Story
A comprehensive history of Britain's greatest bomber plane. The Spitfire and the Lancaster were the two RAF weapons of victory in the Second World War, but the glamour of the fighter has tended to overshadow the performance of the heavy bomber. Yet without the Lancaster, Britain would never have been able to take the fight to the German homeland. Highlights the scale of the bomber's achievements, including the famous Dambusters attacks. With its vast bomb bay, ease of handling and surprising speed, the mighty Lancaster transformed the effectiveness of the Bomber Command.

Story
In 1945, the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong, 5,000 nuclear-tipped missiles, and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward, the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the 20th century.

Story
It was a war without mercy, fought back and forth along 90 miles of river crossings, steep inclines and precipitous descents, with both sides wracked by hunger and disease, and terrified of falling into enemy hands. Defeat was unthinkable: the Australian soldier was fighting for his homeland against an unyielding aggressor; the Japanese ordered to fight to the death in a bid to conquer ‘Greater East Asia’.

Story
A Bridge Too Far is Cornelius Ryan’s masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshaled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters, Ryan brings to life one of the most ill-fated operations of the war.

Good story, poor narration
- By Weatherby George on 08-01-2018
Publisher's Summary
During the third week of February 1944, the combined Allied air forces launched their first-ever round-the-clock bomber offensive against Germany.
The aim was to smash the main factories and production centres of the Luftwaffe and draw the German fighter force up into the air and into battle. Officially called Operation ARGUMENT, this monumental air assault very quickly became known simply as Big Week.
Following the fortunes of pilots, aircrew and civilians from both sides, Big Week is a blistering narrative of one of the most critical periods of the entire war, one that culminated in the largest air battle ever witnessed.

Interesting listen but spoiled
Pity the narrator could not use the term that was abbreviated such as "Bomb Group" for BG and "miles per hour" for mph.
Okay to read BG or mph but a bit hard to listen to it time after time. On the other hand he usually said Fighter Group instead of the abbreviation FG. Maybe he was not advised what the abbreviations stood for. Or should that be acronyms ????
But overall an excellent retelling of a little known aspect of the war in Europe -- except to followers of the trials and tribulations of the USAAF.
Excellent biographies of some of the leading actors on all sides - British, German and American..

I always enjoy works by James Holland. There is a sense of urgency in his prose and his audio books are well narrated. Recommended.

A perfect war account
James Holland goes into great detail of the WWII air war of 1943-44. The accounts and experiences of the pilots from both allied and axis fighters and bombers always got the heart racing. I appreciated how there were accounts from both sides, and the information about the strain that both sides were under during this crucial part of the war.
Great book and highly recommend.

Good book let down by a few minor issues.
A pretty comprehensive account of this part of the war, and a good book, but in telling both the US and Commonwealth sides, it jumped around a bit. Almost needed a US and British reader for clarity. A it was, it was let down by the narrator, who clearly didn't know the subject; the mispronounced names were especially galling; aces and places. I expect better.

Not the best I’ve read.
I’m 4 hours from the end and I haven’t got to the Big Week yet. If you aren’t familiar with the strategic bombing war you’ll find this a gold mine, otherwise it covers a lot of pre ground years ahead of the main topic. And had a repetitive theme “Bob learned to fly as a boy u. Oklahoma….” Having read Mr Holland’s work on Burma, war in the west and Normandy this one was a bit of a let down.
