Publisher's Summary

Basil Bohen was asleep when the System arrived and the world changed....

Dungeons suddenly popped up across the planet, summoning invaders and monsters from alternate realities. Ancient gods slumbering beneath the Earth were woken. And all humans were empowered with Levels and Classes gained by, among other things, killing monsters and other humans.

Only a single instruction was provided by the System: “Whoever reaches Level 100 first shall become Earth’s new Overgod.”

So initiated a worldwide battle royale of epic proportions...which Basil would rather sit out. Choosing the [Tamer] profession, which allows him to speak with his cat, Plato, and other apocalyptic monsters, he'll adopt and train them to fight alongside him and defend his corner of the countryside.

After all, why bother fighting the apocalypse when you can tame it?

Don't miss the start of a new LitRPG series from Maxime J. Durand, best-selling author of Vainqueur the Dragon and The Perfect Run. Full of equal parts action and laughs, this story is a satirical take on the typical LitRPG apocalypse stories blended with elements of Pokémon and Monster Rancher.

About the series: Join Basil as he progresses from level one to 100 all while refusing to play by the rules of the System. Able to recruit monsters to join him with his [Tamer] class, Basil grows a party of unique creatures to keep him company in the end of the world. They'll experience dungeon diving, battles, and building a little slice of forest into a defensible base.

The accents… Oh the accents…

Pretty good story, but the accents the actor gave everyone made me cringe. Each accent was worse and more over the top than the last.

Curious for more, hated the MC

I appreciate Basil was an experiment, but I really struggled to get behind a hero that not only refuses the call to adventure, but gets in a sulk and goes home with his toys and refuses to play with the other kids. Perhaps I'd have been more tolerant if I'd heard the afterwords first, explaining this book as a prequel to the interesting fun times ahead; we shall see.

And Jack is Jack, if you've heard him narrate before it'll be the same experience if you loved or loathed him previously.

awesome

I loved the atypical storyline, and the voice acting was on point. I'm definitely getting the second.

Read this before purchasing!

Ok, so first up, this book is a comedy, and that's important to know before picking it up. Comedy takes a front seat, even during tense fight scenes, and the narrator hams his lines up big-time. This book is VERY different to the Perfect Run. It cranks the silliness and one-lines up to 11.

For me, it didn't work. I like the odd chuckle, but if I wanted cheesy one-liners in a silly voice I'd suck helium and a read joke book. The monster voices are off-putting, and the MC's accent is thick Bulgarian. Unfortunately, this book is one of those rare times where I actively went out of my way to read when I could, as opposed to listen to the narration (that said, the eBook formatting isn't great - there's a whole lot of system notifications formatted as ordinary text, for example. It could really have done with a final edit before publishing).

In terms of story, this book does well (when it's not hamstrung by the comedy). It's your typical otherworldly-apocalypse-come-to-Earth litrpg, with light stats that don't weigh the story down. The MC is a unique character who would rather just stay home than go out and fight aliens. It was a refreshing plot device, even if there were elements of the story that bent around the author wanting this to happen than what I think the MC would have really done. I've never read Don Quixote, but the MC in this book feels a lot like what I imagine he would be like in modern times - constantly making grandiose vows to avenge or protect that feel more like comedy than actual drama.

The MC did occasionally make questionable moral choices, such as choosing to eat sentient creatures. I'm no vegan, but it did make me feel slightly uncomfortable. There are also religious overtones to the book, though these sat better with me. They are incorporated surprisingly well into the text, with different 'real world' religions gaining specialist spells etc. only obtainable to clergymen. If you're a hyper devout Christian or Hindu you might take some offence to several of the themes and characters in the book, but for everyone else, it just adds a lot of flavor.

All in all, this is a decent book if you're looking for a comedy-above-action litrpg story, but it wasn't really my cup of tea.

Oh god the accents!

The narrators natural voice is great but I can’t believe no one heard the monster voices and tried something different.
I only made it 3 hours in and can’t say a single thing about the plot because all I could think about was the awkward, cringe worthy, morphing accents.

I can't deal with the voices.

I listened to almost the whole book - but eventually I just couldn't deal with the voices anymore. The story is not as good as I've come to expect from Void Herald.
