In the shadow of the Pentland Hills, a man has been callously struck down in front of his home. Tyre marks suggest it was no accidental hit-and-run. Somebody wanted him dead and as the man fights for every breath, they might still get their wish. Grappling with the demons he thought he could leave behind after months away on enforced leave, D.S. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand on a desperate search for the truth that will take him from the top of the Tour Eiffel to the bowels of the Paris Archives.
And as Armand begins to uncover the secrets his godfather has kept hidden for decades, he finds himself ensnared in a web of lies and deceit that threatens to destroy everything - and everyone - he holds dear.
For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide....

So Welcome!
I was so thrilled to see another Gamache volume appear in early September, and surprised but only slightly concerned at some of the less enthusiastic early reviews. Personally, and much as I absolutely adore his spending so much time based in his beloved Three Pines, I feel it works very well to every so often set his adventures in logically alternative locations that have been factored in as an extended part of his life in past volumes. I didn't find it protracted or boring, perhaps partly because I adore Paris, and every reference to places I have known personally delights me, and this even extends to St Paul de Vence, in Provence, where I have been on more than one occasion (a truly delightful hilltop village where I would certainly be thrilled to live, myself!) . To me, the reader is invited to share the warmth and interaction of the Gamache family unit as though one was in fact one of the family, which is perhaps part of the particular appeal I have never encountered in any of the other crime thrillers I have read over the years, regardless of how impressive I thought they were overall. Not for the first time, I found myself choking up towards the end as certain events unfolded, and this means I was totally 'in the moment' - casting aside the inevitable reminders to self that - hey, this is just a story - remember!? Loved it, as always!

Brilliant as usual
I think this might just be my new favourite Gamache book. Once again Louise Penny has written a compelling murder mystery with great sensitivity and vivid descriptions. That ‘All the Devils are Here’ is set in my favourite part of Paris was an additional treat.
It is unfortunate that the audio file wasn’t edited! There are many repeated sections that were obviously supposed to be edited out. It’s a little off putting, and I had to knock a star off my Performance rating as a result.

Another clever and entertaining story.
I cannot put into words how much I love the world that Louise Penny has created. The characters, plot, and narration were all up to the usual spectacular high standard. I also love the food and art references, and this time around, the backdrop of Paris. I listen to my audio books when I walk for an hour each day, and listening to these stories is like walking with an old friend. Bring on the next book!

Better and Better! Ths would be the best so far!I
I love all of the the Gamache books, but...honestly...I have tired in the last 4 or 5 ,of the continual repetition and explanation of characters- without much new to add. This book however, set in Paris, ... has the family but all other characters are new. It is brilluantly fresh and complex...political, psychological, ethical and fast-paced!...a wonderful read!

A wonderful storyteller,
Continues to be gripping after so many books.
The narrator is excellent- but this book was poorly edited - I’m hoping audible vet the comments and flag the book for review. There are a number of repeated passages and glitches that need fixing.
But mostly that doesn’t reduce the quality of the overall tale.

Would rather read than listen!
I have read all the books in the series in order on Kindle I should have stayed with that. After reading the series I had images of the characters in my mind's eye. The reading was irritating. I nearly gave up and bought the Kindle version. It would have lowered my blood pressure! Apart from the corny faux Quebecois and French accents, there were a few obvious mis-read words. I made me wonder if there is any proper editing post-narration. The story was interesting with the introduction of new characters and location.
if you have read any of the series, I highly recommend you stay away from the Audible version.
