A great Australian yarn about a bold Australian outback adventure belonging to another time in another world, inspired by a true story. The happy routine life of two Perth boys is shattered one November day in 1950 when they are falsely accused of theft. With fabricated evidence mounting against them they decide to run away from their homes and families to avoid prosecution and pooling their meager pocket money they back the winner of the Melbourne Cup and fund an escape.

Story
Ford laid his fingertips gently on the cut in his shoulder where the bullet had clipped him. His best chance would be to hitch a ride south at the first opportunity, before the police started looking for him. He was alone, enveloped in the monstrous silence of the desert. Free and alone, without assistance and without excuse. Left for dead in the desert, framed as the inside man in a bullion robbery at the remote mine site where he works, and fearing that his daughter and ex-wife have been abducted from their home in Perth, Ford must cross a thousand miles of wilderness to find his family.

Story
The Birdsville Track is one of the best-known - and loneliest – tracks in Australia, and for 20 years Tom Kruse was the mailman, battling the searing heat, floods, and mechanical breakdowns. He made the run every fortnight, and was a lifeline to the isolated settlements and stations along the way, delivering everything from letters to essential supplies. The Track is still just that - a track through the desert and sandhills. Tom began in the days before reliable vehicles, good communication, and air access in case of emergency. He made running repairs of his truck, he loaded and unloaded tons of stores to ferry his cargo across flooded creeks.

Editorial reviews
Richard Aspel has a voice well-suited to this tale of action and intrigue in Australia’s famed, desolate Outback. Deep and rich with plenty of gravel, Aspel occasionally hushes his tone to draw the listener in.
Alice to Nowhere, the first book by the late Australian motor enthusiast Evan Green, focuses on Fred Crawford, a tough mailman who delivers mail by car to the most remote places in Australia - including the Stony Desert, which seems positively Martian. One day in 1957, Fred is delivering Barbara Dean, a young nurse, to central Australia. Mayhem erupts when a couple of desperadoes overtake Fred’s truck and hold Barbara hostage. Alice to Nowhere is for those who love action and the brutal beauty of the desert.
Publisher's Summary
But trouble also arrives. Two vicious men have stowed away, fleeing a brutal murder.
Alice To Nowhere is the story of desperate men and lonely people. It is an action-packed drama played out under the awesome influence of the vast emptiness of the Australian Outback.

A Bit Far-Fetched!
I enjoyed all the information regarding descriptions of town, rivers, creeks, stations and Fred the Mailman of the Birdsville Track (have read the factual book of this).
The story-line was ok, but the ongoing scenarios just became ludicrous and overwhelmed the more interesting content. Never did find out if Sister Barbara got to do her nursing at Birdsville - GRR! I found myself saying “Seriously, that’s just stupid” - bit like the review that classed this book as difficult!

difficult
a good book for the first 1/2 but so dragged out
found myself yelling at the stupid decisions the characters made time and time again
ended up skipping though the last 1hour in 15mins that was plenty of time and plenty of storyline to end the book
I still enjoyed it though
