His life has been about fulfilling the expectations of others. In search of a path of his own, the dreams of others are too tempting to resist. With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species. It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

On the planet Tython, the ancient Je’daii order was founded. And at the feet of its wise Masters, Lanoree Brock learned the mysteries and methods of the Force - and found her calling as one of its most powerful disciples. The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Just amazing
- By Harry on 04-09-2019
Publisher's Summary
The tyranny of the gods is absolute, and they are capricious, malevolent and almost all-powerful, playing cruel games with the fates of mortals for their own ends....
A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.
A conspiracy to reach the heavens and take down the corrupt and ageing gods...who are already facing troubles of their own....
An epic that draws on the Greek mythology of gods and heroes, this new trilogy is a must-hear for fans of Dan Simmons and Madeline Miller alike.
Critic Reviews
"Utterly, utterly brilliant. A masterclass in how to write modern fantasy—world-building, characters, plot and pacing, all perfectly blended. Miles Cameron is at the top of his game." (John Gwynne, author of the Faithful and the Fallen series)

A fantastic first step into a brand new world!
Fantastically written, and amazingly preformed.
Miles Cameron has created an entire new world, mythos and Pantheon. If the quality of this series remains this high in the next few books, well this will be something truly special.

Almost poetic in its telling
How often do you wonder how much of the enjoyment is the writing and how much is the narration? Well if ever a book has been added to by a gifted narrator it is this one. Personally I'm a huge Steven Pacey fan and his work on the Joe Abercrombie books, but the narration in Against All Odds really does - at times - rival that work. The almost poetic nature of the spoken word adds a beauty to this story that I'm not sure is actually there as we plod through the story. This is a book of reflection and conversation. Yes there is action, but it's often chaotic and a bit hard to follow, while for the most part the conversations do eek out the characters and their motivations. Some characters if felt were fairly similar - the mercenary and the scribe for example, or even the wives of the sea captain - which made it a bit slow, but the narrator did their best to bring that to life. Overall the story is fine, the narration is great, but I'm not sure I'd rush to listen to Book 2 - though maybe curiosity will see me come back to it.
