Publisher's Summary

Was the biggest case of his career the worst mistake he ever made?

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed "Mister Whisper", earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow's Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home.

But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

A Litter of Bones is the explosive debut crime thriller novel from JD Kirk, an exciting new voice in Scottish crime fiction.

I think I've found my next detective series!

I am always hunting for a new crime series to really get into, and the Dective Jack Logan series might turn out to be a real treasure. (Though just why the author chose the name Logan baffles me, when Stuart MacBryde's highly regarded Detective Logan McRae series is such a huge presence in 'tartan noir'.)

Jack Logan is likeable enough to want to get to know him better, and I will definitely be buying the next in the series. I don't know if he will return to the Fort William team or move on to another setting next time, but other characters were interesting and well developed, enough to warrant their inclusion in further adventures or to stand alone in Litter of Bones exclusively.

The story itself was outstanding, with a chilling premise underlying a beautifully paced telling. Gritty but not gratuitously gory, it should more than satisfy fans of tough modern detective thrillers.

The narration was a delight, the narrator having a wide range of character voices in his repertoire. The various Scottish accents might prove a challenge for some listeners but for me, they were a great help in following the story and added to the charm of the listening experience. The dramatisation was first rate.

While I didn't quite fall in love with DCI Jack Logan, I very much look forward to meeting him again.

Entertaining airport fiction

Who can resist a cache of Scottish accents. Enjoyed the introduction to the lead character. Story was formulaic but entertaining. Will no doubt pick up the next one in the series in due course.

A crime story with a sense of humour

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. An interesting story well told and an excellent narrator. I really liked the funny quips along the way. Made me laugh. Will definitely read more from this author.

Great Story, Bad Narration

The story was really good, loved the twists. However, the narrator made it a struggle. Being Scottish myself, I understood him perfectly but his pronunciation of some words or names like "Forty" and "Gordon" sounded more like "Fourty" and "Gore-don". I couldn't understand why they didn't pick a Glaswegian to read this with the main character being one, but I guess the fact he was Scottish was enough for the recording company. He also struggled to give characters different voices when he tried. Some sounded similar and made it confusing. I'll probably push through the others to find out what happens because the story was so good but to anyone thinking about this series, sample it first.
