Publisher's Summary

Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

Including Wyn the Soul Eater.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three-year-old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

Soul Eater is book one of Monstrous, a post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. It is a m/m love story and contains sexually explicit content and graphic depictions of torture and violence.

Wyn

I've read this one on kindle and loved it. This Audible version is even better.
Michael Lesley's performance is great he does a great job of all the voices. I particularly like Wyn - he sounds a bit like Agent Smith from the Matrix..

Brilliant story & surprisingly good voice acting

I adore this series, so I was over the moon when I saw it was getting an audiobook version. I was a little concerned that narration wouldn't capture the inhuman quality of the monster voices, but it was done reasonably convincingly.

It DID feel like the voice actor was uncomfortable with the smutty descriptions and dialogue, but seemed to become more comfortable and read with a more natural feel as the book went on.

Overall I loved the audiobook almost as much as the eBook, and will definitely be both listening again and getting Edin (book 2) when it's released. From the sample of Edin at the end of the book, it seems like the narrator is much more comfortable with the dialogue there, so I can't wait for the next release in a few weeks.

Worth the wait!

I was so excited to see this series finally become available as an audiobook. It is probably in my top 3 series of all time.
There is so much going on with the characters and the world, and yet you never loose track of what's going on or become overwhelmed with the enormity of the world because the focus is only on what is happing to these characters right now. The author doesn't get bogged down in detail, but has found the right balance to make the world real and relevant. They accomplish just the right combination of action, paranormal, mystery, romance, and sex to make this just fantastic.

Now I would definitely say this receives 5* for the performance but unfortunately only 2* for the production. I was initially thrown by the voice given to the main characters but that is more because I've read it on Kindle at least twice before and had developed an internal voice for the characters myself. That said, the performance was brilliantly done and the narrator definitely has the flexibility needed for this series going forward.
The production and editing needs some quality control though. In the last 3rd there were quite a few times when lines were repeated, they had a line performed in the voice of a character that was not actually the character speaking, and there were a few pauses that were either way too long or not nearly long enough. I seriously hope they fix this oversight for the next books.

5 Star read

First time author and narrator for me and I enjoyed this book immensely. Great characters brought to life with excellent narration. I especially liked Wyn's voice, the tone and cadence helped set the tone. Gripping story filled with emotion, suspense and love. I liked the writing and have already downloaded the next book in the series. I have a new author and narrator on my fav's list. Spicy and dark, check triggers.

Grumpy & Sunshine with a Monstrous Flavour

I was a little thrown by the accent at first but quickly settled in. Being a first person perspective book meant it was occasionally difficult to tell what was an internal thought vs something spoken aloud but I love Danny and Wyn and their story.
Michael Lesley does a fantastic job of conveying Wyn’s unsettling voice, highly recommend wearing headphones for this one.

Brilliant narration!!

Absolutely loved this audiobook. I’m not the best with audiobooks, it takes me ages to finish them but this one kept me coming back over and over, I hated having to pause it. The narrator did a brilliant job of the accents and characterisation of Danny and Wyn and really brought them to life in a way I’d never experienced before. Could not recommend it more!!

Enthralling Story, Stellar Performance

I absolutely adored this book, and let me tell you, the audio version is an absolute gem that shouldn't be missed. Michael Lasley's performance is nothing short of exceptional, perfectly complementing the brilliance of the story.
