Get a superpower. Roman Martin is a normal guy until he happens upon a winning lottery ticket that grants him an incredible superpower. Unfortunately, Roman has to keep his new power a secret, and in a society that separates superpowereds from half-powereds, that's a big deal. There's also his troubled past, a dark secret that constantly looms over him, his coworker's mysterious death, and the fact that Roman is being blackmailed by two beautiful female spies at war with one another.  

Roman has to keep his superpower a secret, which is increasingly difficult after a bounty has been placed on his head, his workplace is attacked, and someone close to him has turned up missing. With his past catching up to him, and his future murky at best, Roman heads to the Eastern Province alongside the Eastern spy known as Nadine, both of them looking into the disappearance of an entire class of people.

Roman Martin's life doesn't get any easier once he makes his way back from the Eastern Province. The shadow user named Hazrat is gunning for him, and Margo, the mysterious woman who has the same superpower as Roman, will go to any lengths to end his life prematurely. He still hasn't been approved to be an exemplar, and once he confesses to his teacher what he has been up to over the last week, including destroying an Eastern Province military facility, the odds of Roman ever being a superhero are slim to none.

Hate your job. Start all over. Become an assassin. Roman Martin's life continues to take twists and turns he could have never seen coming. A month after losing his power, Roman is greeted by an exemplar named Orange who has some damning information for him. Later, he's given an ultimatum that forces him to become a government assassin, where he's sent to the Western Province in pursuit of a Centralian fugitive he knows intimately. It's not something Roman is comfortable with doing, but if he hopes to survive and avoid prosecution by his own government, it may be his only choice.

Tasked with killing the Eastern spy known as Nadine, as well as risking his life to get information by traveling to a foreign country, Roman develops an exit strategy with a lot of working parts, some of which he has absolutely no control over. Exploiting telepaths, tricking his companions, his government, and even his former teacher, Roman does everything within his power to bring his exit strategy to fruition. But he's still being hunted by Margo, and once the Centralian Government learns of what he's been up to, Roman's enemies grow exponentially.
